This is N900's video playback specification, directly copy and paste from Nokia's webpage:
Video sharing and playback

* Video playback file formats: .mp4, .avi, .wmv, .3gp; codecs: H.264, MPEG-4, Xvid, WMV, H.263
* Video streaming: H.264, MPEG-4, Xvid, WMV, H.263 in .avi, .mp4, .wmv, .asf and .3gp containers
* Video playback in landscape format
* TV out (PAL and NTSC) with Nokia Video Connectivity Cable (CA-75U)
* UPnP via WLAN supported

Obviously that is a bloody lie. I can't seem to play my video files at all. I keep getting the following message:
Unable to play media.
Media format not supported.
I've tried two videos so far, both are avi. Anyway, here's a screen of my video file detail, too lazy to type it up seeing how I can't copy and paste.

The one with xvid codec works half the time, the other half it doesn't. When it does work, it lags like crazy, the video that is. Now, the one that uses the H.264, it doesn't work at all. Both files actually get the same error message.

Also, I've downloaded mplayer, I can't seem to find the icon for it anywhere. Anyone know how I can access it? And, is there anyway to add more codec to the N900? Or at least where I can find a player that can play both my files and MKV files?

I read through that, it doesn't tell me much. I also did search for it, but I only found the .deb files. I can't seem to find the installer program. Also, it's not on repository. How safe are they? From what I've seen so far, I'd assume that each gstreamer file is it's own individual codec, am I correct? If I am, I can't seem to find the codec that will allow mkv to be played.

Hi All,

Here's a bug I think i've come across with video playback and the platform...

I uploaded a whole bunch of .mpg and .avi encoded with xvid/divx.
They played fine. I came back to media player later in the day to play something else on my way home and it just said 'media not supported' and that it couldn't play it; even for the ones that were playing before!

I had to turn off the phone. Turn it back on. Went straight to the media player... and my videos worked again... question is... for how long???

So, this is NOT my imagination. I have this problem too. One time they will play and the next time, some will not play.

I also get a green screen covering about 80% of the screen horizontally on some divx and avi files. The 20% that shows on the top plays fine and sound works. Just mainly a green screen.

N900 needs an update to codecs or just let us have VLC, if it is optimized for the N900.

Sad to see you have this problem but also glad to see it because it means I am not the only one that has this problem. Bought the device to replace my blackberry, ipod touch 32gb and Nokia N95. So media player is very important to me and quite annoyed and frustrated it is giving me so much trouble
