I would love to have this feature too, possibly display the number of new sms, email, ohh and maybe, missed calls and battery life too
I'm not sure if this could be solve with an app or through firmware though

My thoughts exactly. Usually we call it "the desktop". Unless I misunderstood your post, but then again, it's hard not to.

Slighly off topic but I noticed that when the phone is locked and music is playing, you can adjust the volume without unlocking the phone.
Just one press on the power button and you'll have the unlock screen, the volume button works while the screen is lit.
Back on topic, the image file for the unlock screen is in the theme folder.(eg. /usr/share/themes/alpha/backgrounds/lockslider.png)
Maybe you could edit that. not very user friendly but it is an option.

One of the proposed solutions is what you ask for, to have them on the slide to unlock screen. It probably has to be implemented by Nokia, so if you want it I suggest you vote for it. With enough votes, Nokia might do it.

About the name, maybe the best term for it would be the 'standby screen'.
can i easily change the background on this page with the GUI id like something more personal as i see it quite often.
secondly is it possible to put a new sms / email / other notification icon on this page, so i dont have to unlock the device or wait for an led flash to check to new notifications
its so easy to press the hardware power button to glance at this screen it seems logical you would have some info on it.
also what is this screen called, id like to see if i can find out more by searching a specific term
