Hi community!

I'm using DVDFab Platinum to convert my DVDs so I can watch on my N900. I can't get the audio to play on my phone when I use a mpeg4 + aac file. I am able to get the file to play if I make a avi (h264 + mp3) file but toward the end of my movies the audio begins to lag behind the video and it looks like a foreign film that is baddly dubbed. Anyone have any solutions?

Also I'm trying to rip District 9 and can't get the captions of the aliens speaking to work. Pointers?

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with dvdfab. However, if you are able to rip the audio seperately into its own mp3 file and a audio-less mp4 video file you should be able to join the two files using Yamb.
If the subsequent file has issues playing in your n900, you may need to run the subsequent file through handbrake.

When in handbrake make sure anamorphic is set to none and **** for DVD's the width is set no wider than 720pixels. Increasing the width for dvd's is pointless and a waste of space. Lowering the width will save file space at the expense of quality, its a personal choice.
Click the video tab, check constant quality. I prefer RF:16 to RF:15, again its another personal choice for space.

I guess I should point out that there are numerous places that provide instructions for dvd to avi conversion. Try videohelp.com or the search function of this site. The instructions I provided above are what I use to convert HD content to play on my n900, but I change the width to 800pixels.

I have placed a full movie, pixar's Up, on my n900 and it plays beautifully.

Sometimes if computer does not have enough resources audio gets out of sync. Xvid would be easier to decode for N900 than H.264 so using Xvid may help.

Also you may want to try using mplayer instead of default player if player is the guilty one

Probably just need to lower the bitrate of the file, sounds like its going out of sync due to the file being too hard to render.

I had this problem on my W760 Sony phone and its the reason I just got the N900 so I hope I dont find I have the same problem when I get mine in the next couple of days.

Oh and you really should not put H264 in a .AVI, use it in a .MP4 or .MKV container for proper support. I do not think the N900 has .MKV support out of the box so .MP4 is the best choice.

I assume that the N900 should handle a LC AAC file of moderate bitrate + H264 encoded with 3.0 or 3.1 profile with the native resolution of the N900 screen without issue.

If I can manage to remember to find this post I will let you know my findings when I get mine. I have a lot of encoding experience and can give you an optimal encoding setting / guide for the N900 if we do not already have one posted on here.

I would definitely be using h264 not xvid, a nice device like the N900 should not be forced to live in the past with those now outdated codecs, X264 is higher quality and lower file size, quite important when your limited to around 32gb or so of space.
