I don't know how much saving there is for pure 2g vs pure 3g.

The bulk of the power savings come from disabling dual-mode.

In dual-mode, if your phone has marginal 3g signal, it will drop to 2g, and keep searching for 3g, sometimes end up connecting, lose the connection and drop back to 2g. You end up operating both radios simultaneously with dual mode to search whats available.

I have marginal 2g signal at home in San Diego, so I leave my n900 in 3g only mode for similar battery saving effects.

First, make sure you're disconnected from the 2G/3G net. Click on your clock/battery/signal bar and chose Internet connection - choose disconnect if you're connected to a 2G/3G network.

Then go to the main menu, choose 'settings' then 'phone' and under the Network section find the Network mode option. If its set on 3G or Dual - you're in 3/3.5G world. If you change it to GSM - you're in 2/2.5G land

After that, reconnect to the internet (the same place where you disconnected). You'll notice it says 2G or 2.5 instead of 3G or 3.5 below the signal strength meter.

Hope this helps.

Probably true - a lot of the drain comes from constant searching for coverage and switching I guess. Leaving it in "pure" 3G is most likely better than 'Dual', however, with bad 3G coverage at some locations, this would cause problems. If you have good and widespread 3G coverage - guess it wouldn't hurt as much to leave it at this setting. However, if that were the case, Dual mode wouldn't switch from 3G or search for alternatives anyway, so what's the point?

I would have thought so as well, but for some reason my phone will still occasionally switch to the anemic 2g signal inside my house.

I tend to micromanage the battery life on my n900 though. If I'm going into an unfamiliar area I switch to 2g or dual mode (depending on my expected battery requirements and power availability for the day).

If I'm in an area with little or no 3g signal I switch over to 2g only.

ok but how do you turn off the cell signal completely ? While I am at home I want to use the n900 as a MID while roaming the house or in the yard. I could receive call through skype or something, is this possible ?
