Come on granpa, tell us of the times when a thread stayed visible on the front page for more than a day! :-)

I have to admit that things have changed over here at a pace and keep changing. It's part of the fun.

(I know, off topic, but couldn't resist)

But seriously, what kind of blogging activity should Nokia officially have?

I try to post something in the Maemo DP (developer platform) blog sometimes, but I'm guessing the original poster wasn't after SDK news.

I guess right now people are waiting for some kind of an official message on

1) the purpose of the FW update today (i.e. confirmation that its needed to enable the next FW update

2) any indication of when the bigger update is coming OR simply saying that its coming - people are eager to hear but Nokia would need to decied what to say

3) any information/press release on when the Ovi Store is officially launched and the prospects for it (I hope this is in the works already).

With that I would be happy for the time being and that would improve the image among many folks who are so bitterly here flaming and ranting about Nokia right now.

EDIT: Arrggh, Nokia was faster (good for them ) on 1 and 3, but not 2:

For one, some active, official and constantly updated communication (might be a blog post or then some other format) from the maemo team would be nice when something big happens, let's say a fw update for example;

A detailed blog post telling the update is out, what it is doing and how to make the update (the step-by-step process, to make an update or not etc) would be a good start. Yes, i know many people know how to update their device (and the rest should know or at least they should google), but there's always a bit of uncertainty on the air, as we can see from the threads today.

And alas, if something should go wrong for reason or another, updating the blog about the possible reasons and giving directions on how to fix the situation would be great. It might be a bigger bug or just a minor one (eg icons missing from the app manager if one doesn't use the default theme).

Atm if one runs into problems they have to look for answers through threads than can be hundred of posts long. I can imagine that finding the right answer can get a bit frustrating if you are at the same time very worried (and a little bit pissed) about the phone that has just been bricked for some odd reason you cannot understand. Yes, i know, one can always google, but in this kind of situation a warm cozy word from a maemo team (from the authority that is) could be really comforting.

All these might take some pressure and speculation out of the discussion boards and make the more inexperienced users feel that they are heard and cared. Maybe. And on the other hand the more experienced users wouldn't get so frustrated about the same questions popping up over and over again. (of course there would still be ppl with lazy web questions, but maybe a few less). I would go even so far to put a big, and i mean really big, "new fw has arrived - read everything you have to know about here, incl problem situations" sign on the frontpage every time fw is updated.

Is all of the above more suited for a blog post or for other format, i don't know, but i'd say that a very active communication from the maemo team would be very welcomed during the first days (weeks?) of new fw releases.

There's some info about this fw update behind the link on the previous post on this thread, which is nice, but i don't know how should i have found that one before (edit: i mean i tried to skim through the maemo.org news, but could not find this one)? And I think there could be somekind of mention in the maemo announcements as well.

Most of these posts are aggregated at Planet Maemo: http://maemo.org/news/planet-maemo/

Yes, i know Edited my previous post: i skimmed through the maemo news, but couldn't find that blog post from there. Maybe it hasn't aggregated just yet. Or then i am just blind.

Anyway I think it would be useful, maybe some will disagree, to be able to easily find out about new 'official' (i don't know if there's really any) maemo team blog posts - ability to filter them out from the mass maybe? Of course i have to admit that i don't know the history why the blogs are aggregated the way they are, so maybe someone will educate me shortly

Yeah, maemo announcements used to be the place for these kind of announcements in the past, but the announcements seem a bit 'uncoordinated' these days, maybe is just because people is very busy.

It's mainly because the announcements are for community announcements. Nokia has official Nokia channels for official material, like software release info. Like conversations.nokia.com.

Things that are community should be announced in announcements, official stuff can be found in Nokia sources. Then there is the different matter of Nokia employee blogs, that can give backgrounds and insight in to the meaning of things.

Tkojo, i think most i said above still applies. And to challenge a bit: doesn't a new fm relate or effect the live in the community? I think it would be (and is) terrific community management to put up threads like this.

I just wonder why not link to this kind of threads right from the frontpage and from all the other visible places as well. And if there's more background information around, why not gather links to those on the same place as well. And yes, one could link to the official channels as well, thou i suspect that maemo.org will be one of those official channels sooner or later anyway.

This would be very good on the marketing sense and as said, i believe it would lower some noise and repeated questions on the forum as well. Quite surely more and more newbies will find their way into maemo.org, especially if and hopefully when maemo will be a big hit. At that time maemo community should have a strategy to a) how to serve the newcomers (even the less skilled) as well as possible or b) how to communicate to them that maemo.org is mostly a dev community and redirect them to some other place or c) work out how to get those two groups and ppl in between co-exist in a peaceful harmony so that either party won't get frustrated and ill-mannered.

But i guess i am getting a way off topic here. Stopping with linking to a bit similiar discussion (found that linked fw upgrade help thread from there).

Anyway Tkojo, if you are interested we can continue discussing these points f2f at some point if you should be in the city centrum some day. I might even offer some officebrewed Rohea-Ale (home made office beer that is

eholmila agree, Flandry did a great job!

You got it the wrong way round, maemo.org is not becoming an official channel, it's the home of the community. Sure Nokia is a member of the community, but the official info is on sites ending with .nokia.com

But I agree that the recent big interest on Maemo has brought a lot of new people over here, and the community (us all) need to figure out how to make things work smoothly. Looking at the growth numbers it is no wonder that there are occasional bursts of frustration, they just need to be channeled in a constructive way.

And yes, I could wander to your offices some day, it's close enough
