Hi,

I am trying to figure out how I can use my blackberry to provide a data connection to my N900. I have tried settimg up the pc-connectivity tool as well as a dummy connection, but for some reason I can't seem to get a bnep0 device (bluetooth device from ifconfig).

Has anyone been able to get this to work?

I have only seen one other post trying to use the N900 as a DUN client, but it doesn't seem to work for me...

any pointers /msuggestions would be appreciated,

This is the one thing keeping me from the N900. I live in an area where there little to NO GSM coverage but lots of fast CDMA coverage. If there is no way to pull data from an external device like a blackberry i many have to drop the NIT as my pocket computer and go looking to other solutions.

While at CES this last week i was getting mixed massages from Nokia about the ability to leach data off of another devices data connection. I got both a yes, a no, and one maybe in time.

From poking around in the setting and such on a demo N900 there is no easy way to get a phone set up as a data portal. If i am remembering correctly some of the newer BB have wifi and there was a project out there to create an app that would allow you to share your phone's data over wifi. If you are not a total crackberry addict, i know windows mobile has an ICS app.

And if anyone knows a workaround to get data from a blackberry (I have a Pearl so no Wifi) to the N900 over BT let me know. I will order an N900 tonight if i can get my data off my blackberry llike i have been doing for years with the n8x0.

I know people have tethered the N900 to other phones, but one problem is that the blackberries do not offer bluetooth PAN I believe.

They only offer DUN.

A few things needed to be changed in order to work with my Blackberry 9000 Bold and Rogers.

I also had to pair from the Blackberry -> Ubuntu, as I was having problems doing it the other way around.

Anyways, this was using Ubuntu 9.10 with bluez 4.51 .

There are obviously some other aspects to consider, the Blackberry Bolds battery life is already pretty bad, I can't imagine 3G+Bluetooth on with DUN is going to do it any good.

It is also possible to make phone calls from the bluetooth client to host, so it could be possible to create some kind of basic app so you can use the N900 100% of the time and keep your other $500 phone in a bag or something lol.

You need to change the file /etc/ppp/chat/gprs for CDMA, since the dial commands are different.

Would it be possible to create a wiki entry for this? and perhaps myself and/or others could create some kind of gui/widget to connect/disconnect and adjust settings.

PS: Speedtest results (may have been doing other activities in background) using bluetooth tether to 3G phone on Rogers:

GUI: You can use the standard connection gui:
Install dbus-scripts
Create a file called /etc/dbus-scripts.d/orange containing:
/usr/local/bin/db-orange * * com.nokia.icd status_changed orange DUMMY CONNECTED

Now the script /usr/local/bin/db-orange will run whenever you select the orange connection in the connection manager. This script should contains the command pppd call gprs.
Similarly, the same line with DISCONNECTING instead of CONNECTED will call a script when disconnecting the DUMMY connection, so this script shall include killall pppd.

About packaging all this in a way that does not require a full page of instructions - I'd love to see someone else do this.

So lets say we want to package this in a useful way, or at least attempt to.

Would it be worthwhile to start a project on garage.maemo.org? I haven't done any development for maemo 5 yet, but I have setup the SDK and done a few examples.

My plan would be basically to combine it all into one deb file to install. It should have a GUI to add/remove and edit existing DUN connections (would edit specific fields in configuration files).

I can write the gui app to modify the configuration file so users can easily add in their own settings (AT command, Bluetooth device etc).

I would need some help to do this though, since I am not familiar with creating actual .deb files.

Let me know if I should create the project, and hopefully I can get to work on it this evening / tomorrow. I am eager to write a useful tool for maemo.

You can open a garage project, but I am not sure it is needed. If you have a place where you can host a few small files with a few downloads of each, that should be enough. I don't think that this is a project that needs a lot of cooperation.

About packaging - I found it easier to start with a small package (maybe hexedit, for example) and simply replace the source with the source of my program.

Ok I have my n900 and have been able to get root now i am stuck on how to proceed. I have the file download and extracted to my docs folder on the n900 but i can not figure out how to move them (or even how to CD over to them). Also, do i need to install the other link on your instruction page before i move on. Any help would be appreciated.
