I am new here and just purchased the Nokia N800 yesterday. I can't seem to get the internet working. When I check the connection, it says that I am connected to a WLAN (I was in a wireless hotspot when I did this). But when I open up the browser and go to www.yahoo.com, a message comes up that says "Network connection error. Try again?" This is getting realling annoying. Can someone please help me fix this problem? I don't know what to do.

Can anyone please help me with this problem? I am new at this, and this device is useless to me unless I can browse the web and chat with it.

You'll have to find an open wireless network. Use the connection manager to try different network's.

The Tools/Connection manager application will help. Use Menu/IP address to see if you have a vakid address.

You could also set up your own wireless network.

You could have asked someone at the hotspot if you needed anything special to connect, like a password. The network you tried to connect to might not have been the right one. Often there are several in range, but only one works. It is usually quite easy to make work, if it is a hotspot that others have working but you don't, maybe they are paying for their service. Look for lists of free hotspots.

Do I need to set up anything first? It says I'm connected to a WLAN and the icon on the top right corner of the screen indicates it too. However, I keep getting the message "Network connection error" or "Network problem."

You're not giving us enough information. Are you connecting to your own wireless network? Or illegally to somebody else's? Does the network require a password?

I am connecting to the NYPL (New York Public Library) network. When I connect with my laptop, the connection is EXTREMELY strong (I am able to download at GREAT speeds with my laptop on this connection). I don't know why my Nokia n800 cannot browse the web.

This seems to be the 3rd incidence where a new N800 will authenticate to a WLAN but is unable to route through to the internet.

lil_killer129 - you might want to read this thread and also this thread, then respond here with the details from Tools>Connection Manager>Intermet Connection>IP Address when you have established a connection to the NYPL wireless network.

If the addresses appear correct (we can advise if you aren't able to tell yourself) then it may be necessary to exchange your N800 unit (would this suggest there are units in the channel with defective WLAN modules?) Replacing the N800 worked for Rab, not sure if stellie resolved his/her issue - stellie, update please?

Does the New York Public Library network have any information available about using their wireless? Do you need a password, as was asked and not answered by you?

I gather that you have not been able to connect anywhere, or have not tried anywhere else? You don't have to set anything up; it just works, in general. But of course you have to enter a password if one is required.

The threads Milhouse linked should help IF the device is not defective. I've encountered the same problem and troubleshooting narrowed my issues down to router configuration (had to be in mixed mode for one) and/or security selections (including having the right protocol and password).
