Have "the same" issue with leafpad, if I launch it via xtem after sudo gainroot it can't save anything ... it simply crashes.

Well.. you used to be able to use "rootsh" to do such a thing but it was removed with the thought of security.

Then it turned out it didn't save anything.... because you can do:

echo emelfm2 | root
to also launch it as root in an icon like that. At least, that is what was said in another thread.

This doesn't do it for me... the app tries to launch then crashes.

Maybe it has to be added to sudoers: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=40698

And yes I'm a SOB for asking in two places at once, sorry.

What I don't get is why there are so many traps laid all around for people that want to learn to know their way around linux... How "safe" do we have to be kept from ourselves?
I use open SSH + scp from day 1 and I can say it bypasses most of the "locks" a noob could run into; in the end things like these can only break patience and pleasure to use.

What happens when you do it by hand Bec?

Run sudo gainroot in a terminal and then just type "emelfm2".

I know its not the same.. I want to know if it works or if it closes out like running it directly does.

Instead of piping it to root pipe it to sudo gainroot instead:

Sorry for late answering (different tome zones) i'll try it after my phone gets charged... something unexpected happened today, it's noon over here and the batt is DEAD... never had this happening before.
Something got stuck in my memory locking the cpu at 100%

EDIT: tried to run visudo and although "nothing happened", I got myself a nice running app called "vi" that was using my cpu 90-100%. The battery lasted 8 hours this way.

As simple as that: Because these files either should not interest you as a normal, average user, or if you're an advanced user there are way better and efficient ways to access them than the File Manager.

top (or htop which is nicer but will need installing first).

In a terminal on the N900, do the following 3 commands:

- You're still browsing as 'user' which means you can't screw anything up too badly
- The file manager still won't show you files or directories beginning with '.'
- The mount won't persist across phone reboots (this can be solved with a bit more tinkering)

[Edit: whoops - you're not going to be able to change the bootscreen this way, sorry!]
