I have said this already to you. You device is fck up. You keep reporting issues that clearly tell that you should reflash or get rma. These really weird problems dont help you or anybody. If you like punishing yourself and keep using that half bricked device then i cant help

i think i have to count my blessings..
the "only" thing happened to my-perfectly fine before update- N900 is sudden reboots, reason : 32WD_to..with should have been fixed in this new update?....i also would love to downgrade...

But a better backup would offer restoring the entire system to it's previous working state, even if that means it's just pointers to previously installed package versions and their config files.

2. So you can't restore the old firmware because it won't work with the newer GSM firmware. That's like saying you can't undo a package update because your kernel/libc is now too new.

Well, yeah, so tell me again why can't you roll back the GSM firmware like everything else? It's demonstrated it can replace the GSM firmware with a package update. It's unlikely to be all that hard to replace it with an older GSM firmware - if Nokia decides to support it.

It is clearly Nokia policy to not support full system rollbacks / system restore, rather than technical reasons. If that screws a few customers, hey, there's millions of other customers, we can ignore the screwed minority...

It backs up user data, like contacts and messages. Scr3w the app list, that's a courtesy.

In theory, one could have the FWs on the flash and use a flasher to swap versions like socks. Since the 1.1 is 90 MB but requires 45M on the root, I assume it's stored on-flash and a local installer does the dirty work. (By flash I mean the eMMC or the SD)

As I understand flashing, trouble is that ver 1.01 (and assumingly 1.0) don't have ANY GSM chip on-package, since it was already in the chip in the factory. So flashing back would not restore the firmware.

In order to roll back, Nokia has to release a firmware that is identical to 1.0 and 1.1, but also includes the GSM FW and the flasher for that, plus the install scripts needed to flash that, too. Which sort of beats the whole idea of identical.

I'm not saying they shouldn't, but I understand if this is less than easy to do.

What I don't really understand is:
a) How many people have issues with 1.1? it's hard to guess
b) Out of these people, how many flashed their device clean off, with the EMMC and the cable and the flasher.exe, making sure there are no incompatible settings or apps or somesuch nonsense.

I think it matters.

Also, can't Customer Service fix this? SHOULDN'T CS fix this? IMO if the device has no Alpha software and the device is erratic, they fix they should.

If Nokia is not going to make sure their firmware works, they need to have some basic phone functionality that can run independent of maemo, so that even when maemo is ****ing up, people can still make and receiver phone calls. Your average Joe is not going to tolerate a phone that just stops making phone calls.

This is an inherent limitation of Li-Po and Li-Io safeties. Any phone left discharged long enough is not going to charge again. It's true that N900 is a bit special and thus more sensitive to this, but the changes were necessary.

There are ways of recovery from this, like desktop chargers or a friend with a compatible phone (e.g. 5800XM).

Because the update might go wrong and you might want to flash to a clean version of the latest firmware. This is a one-off deal here. Don't expect firmware updates in the future that can't be rolled back, but this one can't be because of the CMT firmware.

Why that is, I don't know, but it's apparently the case and I'm inclined to trust Nokia probably has a good reason for it.

I appreciate that but with the nokia repositories down I could not get the latest firmware of flasher!!

I have since, through contacts on this forum managed to get both :d Which is great for me but a sad indictment on the fact that I could not even get out of the mess without individuals help. Hell even the crap that MS has left my computer in has at least, courtesy of a disk, given me the option to re-install.

The device was re-flashed this morning. It now works perfectly, but as maemo.org servers are down there are a fair few apps that are not working still.

The plus points:-
  • This forum is excellent
  • People were kind enough to upload the latest version of the firmware for me
  • It is working very well now, only the single unexpected re-boot and battery life is superb

The bad points
  • The abuse, from a minority, you get for posting about a genuine problem on here!
  • The fact that Nokia and Maemo servers can be down for a weekend, fantastically poor for a commercial enterprise
  • The assumption that anyone who has bought an N900 is a command line guru, and is otherwise ridiculed.
  • Servers being down for 2 days is considered acceptable, and we should not mention it

On balance I will stick with my N900 because it is great, but this experience make me wary. I have worked in IT for over 20 years and lived through the pain of DOS and Windows ME so not some noob. I do expect that if I have a problem with my device that with the help of the manufacturer maybe, that I could get myself out of it. My experience so far is that this is not the case.

So thank you to those who helped, including yourself Slender, thankfully the helpers are the vast majority.
