If it's really saying "iplayer not found", then you have a simple typo problem. You're typing "iplayer <rest_of_command>" when you should be typing "iplayer-dl <rest_of_command>".

Well - I was just noticing that you had a very hard time following quite simple instructions, were rude to the people who were trying help you, but its this comment that gets me:

Show me where I was rude to people. You said people rather than person meaning more than one person I was rude to. The only thing I can think of was when I called Jan's instructions rubbish (which I soon after apologised) but emotions aside, my statement is correct. The instructions on page 1 SEVERAL DAYS AGO were incomplete, missing out crucial steps such as not mentioning rootsh. The instructions now are much much better and I think I played a major part of that as most problems I faced have a mention now on page 1 which benefits new comers. There is also the fact that I am new to Linux.

The instructions back then were not simple like you make out to be, so don't make me look like an idiot who can't follow basic instructions. The fact that others also experienced the same problems I had is further proof that the instructions back then were far from simple.

Yes, I saw updates available so I got them. I repair PCs all the time and understand it is usually a good idea to update software and drivers often. I like to be up to date with things, hence why I replaced my n810 with the n900. I can tell you now, if I had todays present instructions complete with warnings, I would never have updated Ruby (which was the cause of my problems and not rootsh like you seem to suggest was)

I've thanked people who have helped me and tried to help 2 other people on here with problems. So I ask... show me where I was rude...

firstly thank you very much for this - your instructions on page 1 made sense to me and worked first time. i am also like others - a newbie - but have managed so far to MOD battery icons, phone name, profiles via tweakr and boot screen video.

However my iplayer URL download in xterm works perfect when connected via my WLAN as follows;
usyBox v1.10.2 (Debian 3:1.10.2.legal-1osso26+0m5) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

but when i connect via T-Mobile Internet in UK on my unlimited data connection i get the following;

Because T-Mobile block iplayer!

only 3 UK & Vodafone Contract customers can access iplayer in the UK via 3G

I'm on t-mobile on the same plan and can download ok but only when connected to my wireless network.

Your mobile operator is irrelevant - when you are using your own wireless network iplayer will work, but when you are out of range of it and reliant on 3G it will not (unless you are a 3 UK or Vodafone contract customer).

Thanks for the advice - not sure how many other people out there will know this, so i'm stuck using this app whilst in range ofa WiFi

Would it be possible for Jan or someone else to take this code/script further by having it 'fool/trick' the iplayer servers into thinking i am on 3G or Voda rather than T-Mobile UK ?

Well I am very pleased that some people are getting this thing to work.

May I start at the beginning in order that you will know where I am at now, what I have done and which will hopefully allow somebody to help me?

First up I installed rootsh ok and then did the following: -

sudo gainroot
apt-get update
apt-get install iplayer-dl

Regrettably I believe I have subsequently updated with the extras-devel catalogue Enabled, so I think I've updated Ruby by mistake

Question 1 - how can I check and how do I rectify this, if I have inadvertently updated it please?

Next what exactly do I type here when you say insert this (starting with a blank terminal window)?: -

echo 'alias iplayer="iplayer-dl -d /home/user/MyDocs/.videos"' >> /home/user/.profile

Question 2 - the bit after .videos"' is unclear to me - I mean what does ">>" do?

Very confusing and Question 3 - I still do not know what the exact bit is after videos - "' is this '", ' ", "' or " ' - several posts contradict each other as regards the exact syntax - I am pointing this out as a noob, hope you understand.

When I type - iplayer URL I get iplayer-dl not found

Now these commands are inserted into a newly opened terminal window exactly as it opened no more, no less: -

When I type: ls -l /home/user/.profile I get nothing which suggests "root" but I really didn't understand the output lol!

When I type: iplayer-dl --help I get iplayer-dl not found

When I type: id I get something like 29999 (user)

When I then type ip I get a list of the commands starting with ip and iplayer-dl and iplayer-dl-gui (or something like that) both show ok

I have tried several "URL's" to make sure but every time I press enter, iplayer-dl not found is returned.

Something is wrong.

I know I am a noob, so I understand that if I fail that is not the fault of anyone on this board - I know how much hard work has been put into this so far and it is much appreciated. However if there is some way to correct what I'm doing with no knowledge of the commands I'm entering, then I really would appreciate some more help.

Would it be possible to give me a starightforward list of commands in numerical order saying why each one is necessary, what it does and the return response I should get? This would be terribly helpful

It is now 08 45am GMT and I will be leaving for work at 12.30pm - there is absolutely no rush about this, I just want to have another go but am frightened that I will eventually insert something which will brick my phone! However if I don't reply until after 23.00pm tonight, then at least you will now know why

Ist up I think, is to find out which version of Ruby I have installed/updated - we could start from there please - see my above questions.
