Is it possible to disable the maemo booting progress indicator?

I want to get just the kernel text output.

you need a different kernel on the device to be able to do that.

specifically, you need the framebuffer console enabled.

Jebba has done this with the N900, but it's not something i'd recommend to beginners, you can easily (very, VERY easily) brick your device when messing with a custom kernel.

What about just disabling the video?

that you can do, by deleting or editing the file /etc/hildon-welcome.d/default.conf

although i'd recommend setting up the maemo.org boot video, it's really nice
