Since version 1.41, Media Converter gives me serious problems with aspect ratios of converted movies. I get inconsistent results: movies get stretched vertically, or are cropped without me asking for it first.

Other than that, VirtualDub gives me a lot more control over clips I recorded myself: cropping, resizing and oodles of other ways I can fritz up a movie that I haven't even discovered yet.

Just a quick advices for video conversion: always try to use integer values!

Examples:
- The screen resolution of the N800 is 800x480. So if your video is 400x240, when asking the N800 to go fullscreen it will use a very efficient and clean "x2" filter.

- If the video you are about to convert is 30 frames per seconds and you whishes to reduce the frame rate, choose 15 or 10 (1 out of 2 or 1 out of 3), and avoid 24!

Here is the latest profile I did for iriverter 0.16 (http://iriverter.sourceforge.net/)
Code:
brand=Nokia
device=N800
maxVideoBitrate=768
maxAudioBitrate=192
dimensions=400x240
maxFrameRate=30
wrapperFormat=avi
audioFormat=mp3
This profile will preserve original video aspect ratio adding (if needed) black strips on top/bottom or on the borders.

Thanks for the info. I like Media Converter's convenience, but now I'm going to have to play around with VirtualDub and iriverter. The tinkerer's curse: if I could stop fiddling around with software, I'd get more movie watching done. ;-)

So how do you add a profile to iriverter then?

Actually, you do not have to limit mp3 to 96 kbps - 128 and up are fine.Modern mplayer versions are using DSP core to decode mp3 audio, this causes no load on main ARM core at all, so any bitrate which can be handled by DSP is ok and this is surely over 128kbps.

Pretty easy. Go to C:\Program Files\iriverter\profiles, copy one of the existing ones and name it n800.profile for example, edit it accordingly and you're done.

Launch iriverter, select "Options" menu, "Device", "Nokia", "N800".
Then "Options" / "Bitrate" to select the bitrate you want for audio and video.
I would recommend also to select "Normalize Volume" in "Options" / "Advanced" / "Volume..."

Drag and drop the file / directory you wishes to convert and run

I have no special interest in iriverter. It is "yet another front end on mencoder" but I find it very easy to use and stable. I used it intensively for my iriver U10 before I go my N800. Since I'm used to it and didn't found anything else doing a better job, I didn't change.

Only thing I can not talk about is the conversion of a DVD. I never used that feature so I don't know how it behaves.

Thankies very much! I already have something to take care of DVDs.

Update:

I just tried Iriverter with the parameters rheve gave earlier and the converted video doesn't stretch to fill the screen: It really plays as a 400x240 video, leaving half the N800's screen black, both in Mplayer and Media Player. If I select "Pan and Scan", I first of all get a cropped video (not what I want), and the filesize is twice that of the first conversion (even with reduced sound bitrate), from 350 to 750 mb.

Weird. And back to VirtualDub, I guess...

Waooo, that is very weird! In the "Help" menu their is a "Log Viewer". This allow you to get traces of the transcoding process. Could you give me a copy of this log when you convert a video that "does not stretch"?
