Have you tried to copy the video on the device? If it works this way then probably there's not enough speed on the wifi.

I think streaming AVI is broken in the new update it's in the bug list I think. http://bugs.maemo.org

I actually have orb installed on the same computer, if I run the media through orb, it plays but its slow and keeps buffering.

The normal media player just doesn't show video but sound is fine.

Ill check that bug page out.

Let me just add, its not the speed of the Wifi as I can stream the same video to any of the laptops in the house without any problems, its only on the n900, and I seem to think its something to do with codecs, but I have installed the extra codec pack so maybe not?

Is there anyway terminal command to check to see what codecs are installed, and what codec the file i'm trying to play is? Maybe that would give me something to go off?

The problem is already discussed in this thread:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=40523

It is a bug in PR1.1 firmware.
A bug report has been issued.
Nokia team said the bug is fixed in the latest internal firmware version.
Nokia will not say when this new firmware version will be released to public. There is speculation that it will happen in March, or April at worst.

Don`t know how i fixed this but I had this bug with the new firmware, but not anymore! I can stream divx/xvid with the media player through wifi.....yes!....my only problem that I cannot fix and I don`t want to reflash the device again is that the backup software keeps hanging.I cannot make a backup ... oh well, at least the streaming works!

can you try to explain how you fixed it? installed extra decoders? deleted some apps?

extra decoders were always there.I`ve installed them long time ago....the major apps I`ve installed the last couple of days were the 'rootsh' and 'mad developer' to access my N900 files on my PC through wifi.....then all of a sudden the wifi streaming was working....strange I know

Also, I`ve deleted the media player widget because of a known bug....I couldn`t play any mp3 files on it, keep hitting play and nothing was happening ( I think that`s because of a problem having 3 widget at the same time; weather, conversations and media player)
