@ Volt, you sure aren't getting the point here! Everywhere you read you see that almost all n900 users are fed up with nokia and their marketing plans. If they dont start listening to their customers and maybe spending some money on it, there wont be any Nokia anymore in a few years!

Here in the netherlands everyone is disapointed because there is so little support on the n900. people like me spend 600 euro's almost (700 dollars) for this device. And you say to me nokia doesn't have to fix the navigation... man what are you thinking? Every freaking phone that is released by nokia has a turn-by-turn navigation. why isn't there one on the n900.

90% of the people here are not buying the n900 because the lack of descent apps and no turn-by-turn navigation. (not talking about free).

Last few years nokia isn't listening to what the customers want. the result: they lost a very big amount of the market. to other smartphone makers who do care about their customers.

Dont go bul$hitting, Nokia needs to make turn-by-turn navigation or they will again lose allot of customers this year! And maybe they should go making rubber again becaus this is bull!

@sygys, glad that you've wrote all this so I don't have to

February for me is a key month, If nothing happens than I'll simply sell it.

Bear in mind one thing, Nokia only cares about mass market customer, and mass targeted devices they produce. This is the area where all the support and money go.

If that's the politics than all wait for the mass market maemo_number_you_name_it next gen device, I need a phone that gets its support during at least one year after the lunch with all the hardware covered by the software, no leftovers.

Apparently it was you who weren't getting the point. That is really far from what I said. I said Nokia will not fix navigation. That's life. Live with it.

As to there being no Nokia in the future, Nokia sell more cell phones than any other company. The N900 demand seems to be higher than the supply.

I don't think the N900 support is any much different from any other phone I have owned. Infact, not many cell phones I have owned had as many as two firmware upgrades. My last one had a fix that prevented it from bricking, and a fix to improve battery life. That's all. It wasn't a Nokia. The global trend is towards better support, which is made easier by several devices sharing the same OS. But what you expect is beyond what the average real world experience is.

Nokia recently announced a upgrade to offline navigation software on a handful devices, to already existing customers. Every phone blog in the world made that headline news. Why? Because it is unheard of. Because Nokia is the first company to do such a gesture.

And here people are enraged that this free gift wasn't given to their device.

Greed.

I'm always amazed that the huge number of firsts and community oriented uniquenesses (is that a word?) of the Nokia/Maemo ecosystem are just taken completely for granted or ignored the moment something shiny is spotted.

Well, the smartphone market is very fast moving. Consider what we had three years ago. No high resolution, no navigation, hardly any GPS, open phone OSes were a theory, WiFi was reserved for expensive models, A2DP wasn't working, only business models had document readers, hardly any touchscreens until the Iphone... I say we're getting a lot of progress in not so much time. Maybe that confuses some people whenever they see something being held back.

volt's post on ovimaps does make sense, as an admirer of the n900, only ovimaps is holding me back, or the lack of it.

since ovimaps 3.0 was never on the n900 to begin with, it doesn't look like a x3.0 will be developed. further, just because ovimaps 3.0 is free for other symbian nokia phones does not mean that buyers are getting this free upgrade. eldar from mobile-review did an extensive writeup on this, i believe the approach that nokia is taking now is to bundle in free navigation for the subsequent new phones that nokia sells.

this means that ovimaps cost will be a one time fee that nokia factors into cost of selling the phones. this could also mean that nokia can justify keeping prices somewhat higher over the lifespan of the device. this would make sense for lower cost devices (below n97 series) while also charging a small premium for their flagship devices. since the free ovimaps navigation applies to the symbian newer phones, it looks like nokia is banking largely still on this symbian os to push tha majority of smartphones. seeing as they have the lionshare of smartphones in the world, i sense that relying on a somewhat limited symbian os is the power of nokia's sales team doing their work to push volume of phones, rather than a r&d department pushing the limits of tech (maemo).

that being said, even without ovimaps navigation, the n900 is something i'm lusting over. i figure i can use google maps on the browser in a pinch. and yes, i still want VERY MUCH for ovimaps proper navigation, offline gps mind you, to appear for the n900. i'm going to wait as long as i can the next few weeks and hope and pray that nokia does not snub the buyers of it's most expensive, most advanced smartphone.
That is why i say when iPhone 4 comes out...GOODBYE NOKIA!! It's not the phone i don't like..it's the support and Nokia management has BIG BIG problem. They don't know how to prepare things ahead of time. That is why you see the N900 being delayed...that is why you see Ovi store being delayed...and that is why Ovi Nav N900 is also delayed.

don't know how reliable this one is but i read it few minutes ago:

Sind derzeit zehn Nokia-Modelle in der Lage, das kostenlose Ovi-Maps-Angebot zu nutzen, sollen ab März alle GPS-fähigen Nokia-Smartphones mit dem Programm und länderspezifischen Karten ausgeliefert werden.
short in english: it says that there are only ten nokia models which are able to use the free ovi maps offer at the moment but from march on ALL phones with gps will be delivered with pre-installed local maps.

But it still does mean nothing at all, 'cause nokia will classify the N900 as a mobile computer and hence we're screwed.

The latest post on blog.ovi.com (posted today, 3rd Feb) says
Also, a heads up to everyone thinking of getting a new phone: starting next month all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones will include the new version of Maps, pre-loaded with local country map data, with high-end walk and drive navigation and access to Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides at no extra cost.
The word 'all' is in bold in the post, but I won't hold my breath

sorry if this has been posted already but on the Nokia Blog while the Ovi store was down, they posted this...

key word being all, and it is safe to say that the N900 is under that umbrella!
