im not using protection, i have the device since the 4 december. only some very light scratches, noticeable when the display is off and put in front of strong light. from the scratches positions im pretty sure they are caused by my girlfriend fingernails when playing angrybirds. she will surely hear me when i'll meet her this eve.

I've had my N900 for exactly 2 months. No noticeable scratches. If you're careful and take care who touches it then no problem.

It's a touch screen so it's supposed to be touched directly. I could draw an analogy with condoms and sex but I won't

Have been using for about a month without protector.
No scratches.
Maybe I have more grease hand than everybody else, but can't get to wipe the screen clean. I wipe it with the cloth that came with the N900, but even then there's some residue in form of lines in the direction it was wiped, which is visible under sunlight.

You big greasy man!

No, I have that problem as well -I ended up using screen cleaner to clean my screen before applying my screen protector.

Sorry to bring it up but the iPhone has an anti-grease coating on the glass. Shame Nokia didn't copy that...

A new one does - from all accounts, this doesn't last that long though. It may well not be possible to use it on a plastic screen as well.

I was having that problem too. I finally gave up on using my fingers and just use the stylus all the time. The screen stays nice and clean now.

A question for all you "screen protectors"...

Do you practise safe sex as well?

Utter nonsense. A device's usefulness is determined by its owner. I have an N75 that's about 3 years old that stil gets used on occasion. Oh, and same for the N800s my kids still use.

And yes, it's time to buy my N900 some screen protection...

I sometimes wonder if screen protectors can actually have a detrimental effect on the screen due to having to use more pressure. The screen is calibrated for use as is. Logically, adding another layer spreads the pressure point to some degree and requires a bit more pressure to achieve the same result. Granted, this difference can be very small and it is probably negligible. But, I sometimes wonder...

I had my N900 proto for a few months and never used a screen protector. I just used common sense with what pocket I was putting it in with... no keys or anything stupid like that. I only had two tiny scratches in the bezel, not even the screen itself.
