The N800 is pretty quick though, even if not instant. Of course it can keep several applications active at the same time, and then the switch _is_ instant.

Oh, ok... Well, that comes partially from having an integrated OS that apps are specifically written for and within. You'll see that once Apple allows third party apps to be developed, the "quickness" will degrade a little -- probably not much, though, as Apple prodes themselves on high usability.

Processor speed is also a factor. But, not much... Have you used the latest version of UKMP? (https://garage.maemo.org/projects/ukmp/) Some of those smooth/quick/cool-GUI aspects aren't the device itself, but the time that developers want to spend building those "effects" into their apps.

If Nokia created some sort of uniform coding/GUI bible for devs to work off of, this might be achievable. But, I don't really see that happening anytime soon. (Maybe for the N900?)

In any regard, the current closed-architecture model for the iPhone is a little bit annoying. As a Mac user myself, I was hoping that they wouldn't go that way. So far, from what I've seen the N800 surpasses most of the things that the iPhone can do (aside from the cell part, of course).

It was mentioned that the iPhone will allow for 3rd party apps, and they will open up the SDK to developers at WWDC next week, and applications will be installable by end of year.

Truthfully I think its the final nail in my N800 coffin. I might have a for sale ad on the 30th of June if the iPhone functions as well as I'd like. Along with a Blackberry Pearl.

I initially got my N800 for pocket browsing and Gizmo since my home had terrible cell reception. I have since moved, and have 5 bars inside my house... so VOIP went out the door for me.

The iPhone is a phone, the internet tablet is a quite different thing. They don't compare, in my opinion. The more I look at the iPhone the less I see any relevance for comparing it with the N800. Anyway, I got pretty fed up with the previous round of iphone hype, so I think I'll stay out of this one for now..

TA-t3, you're right... I don't think they really compare.

I use my N800 to browse, play video (which needs conversion anyway), and some ScummVM. The email sucks terribly, and there is no decent PIM solutions.

I won't make the assumption that the iPhone browsing experience is better or equivalent to the N800 till I have my hands on it. Once I see it with my own eyes, I'll make the decision to stick around with Nokia or not.

I imagine the Opera 9 and Skype upgrades will keep it ahead of the iPhone, but everything else seems to be lacking... We'll see at launch!

Guess that we should see it in action, 'cause I remember also the advertising on the 770 (nokia site) once OS2006 was out, and it appeared to be smooth ad fast

Regarding the thread, given that most of us couldn't see the ads, it appeared in fact that you were refering to the ads instead of the functions of the iPhone (maybe if I could see the ads I would have understand you). Furthermore, I was inluenced by my opinion, which is that Nokia should push on the advertising if they want to make more businnes with internet tablets (the video on the N800 is a good starting point, but guess no one ever saw it here in italy, except N800 owners...)

Guess the one on Opera is just a rumor.. I never heard about it (despite it is a hope for much people here, including myself).

And (cut the part in which you talk of it) if the display is really that 320x240 the rumor told, guess the browser experience won't be so satisfactory

Its actually 320x480, which isnt too bad since they are using scaling to fit it on the screen.

I'm so fond of my Blackberry that I will have a hard time letting go though... I may just end up replacing my Pearl with a Curve and enjoy my N800 as is.

I'd probably buy the iPhone based on apple UI, polish and the ability to merge my phone with my n800 browsing/mail/chat/pda/light application work.

Except that it's locked to AT&T.
AT&T can DIAF.

By the time the iPhone is available under a decent US carrier I'll probably be looking at the hypothetical n900 anyway.

If there was 3G on the iPhone, I could possibly find space for it in my gadget bag. As is I already have every single functionality that it can provide and much , much more between my N800 and my N75.
On topic, those adds are great and do so much better than the Nokia ones for a simple reason, they make it clear what you can do with the device...simply. The N800 and N93/N95 ads are great and all but really don't show you practical application of the abilities.

But as cool as the ads are I will probably wait till 2008 sometime to do a N900 and 2G iPhone upgrade from my current setup.
