Just bought a MiFi from 3 UK. (Actually just a Huawei E5830 with a 3 Sim card)

http://threestore.three.co.uk/broadband/?mifi=1

I cant get it to connect and show me more than the my3 page! Once its shown me this page it then wont show me anything else. The connection just times out.

I can make WiFi conenctions to my home router provided I turn off WiFi power saving. If I dont then the router crashes! Tried the same thing on the MiFi with no change in result.

Has anybody else tried this device and had any success?

Hi,
I just tested the N900 with Huawei E5830 sold by Italy WIND mobile operator.
I found 2 way to setup the wifi between them:
- click on the status-bar plugin "connection" then choose the right wifi name, it will ask you to prepare the WPS on the router press OK on the n900 and then push and keep pushed the button "WiFi/WPS" on the MiFi, keeping it pushed the "W" led will first turn off but then will blink fast. Now the MiFi it's in WPS mode, click again "OK" on the N900 and it should setup fine
- the other method is setup the connection manually on the n900: go to settings > connections and add a new connection it will search for wifi connections and allow you to connect that way.

Thanks for the reply.

I assume you had no problems after making the initial connection?

FYI I used the first method and managed to get my N900 linked to the E5830.

I think I am going to be able to get it to work now. I just need to ignore the instruction manual...

I conected the E5830 to my PC and setup an account on the 3 site and after some wandering round outside I managed to get the E5830 to pickup the text giving me my password.

When I power the thing on the red signal light flashes which the manual says means "need to insert the SIM card" which I already did.

Not sure if its the differant state of the lights (signal light was green last time I tested which should mean eveything is working!) or creating the account, but after some more wandering today I again managed to the web. Slowly but it did work. (The signal light was red i.e. "cant detect a network" according to the manual!)

So I think its probably an issue with signal strength, the E5830 itself or maybe it was creating the account that did it!

You can check the signal strenght in the web admin page:
connect to the E5830 via wifi, open the browser and point to http://192.168.1.1/ the default password is "admin"

Think the Web Admin page is disabled when using the default firmware (doesnt work and what ive read suggests this is expected). You need custom firmware that enables it. If I could reload the original firmware Id give it a try, Cant seem to find it though!

The WIND Italy firmware is fine as it has no blocked features.
Try here for firmware update process:

Can I ask why you need to connect to the MiFi Device?
Ulitmately it connects to the Internet via a 3G connection, isn't that what the N900 is designed to do?
N900 --- 3G ---- Internet
instead of
N900 ---WiFi--- MiFi --- 3G --- Internet

My current service provider is vodaphone...

This costs me virtually nothing as provided by work, I just pay for personal calls at 1p per minute I think it is. But I cant get a data connection on it as the company wont allow personal use!

Dont really want to change to another provider and get charged much more or carry two phones arround so the MiFi thing is the best solution at the moment. (10 pounds for 1GB per month)

If the N900 supported any dual SIM adapters Id get one of those, but Ive read it does support them and can as the N900 software doesnt do any SIM services.

yeah I found that already. Dont really want to update the firmware though untilI know if I can get a signal or not. According to the 3 website I should be able to get a full 3G signal where I am, but I get no 3 service at all. Need to try when Im out tomorrow as thats really where Ill use it (got Wifi at home of course)

If theres no signal I might unlock it and try a tmobile SIM. Unfortunately I went for the version with three months data included as it worked out cheaper. This may not have been a good idea.
