Hi All,

this is my first time posting on this forum and I'd like to find out what actual download/upload speeds people are getting from there n900 on different carriers. Basically I really really want to go out and purchase a n900 (like yesterday). My current carrier is AT&T and I've read that there 3g data service is not offered on the frequency that the n900 uses. I've also read that T-Mobile does support 3g data service for the n900 which I would gladly move to if my wife didn't just get an iphone with a 2 year contract So I thought it would be helpful to me and past/present/future n900 users to get a good idea of what actual download/upload speed would be on different carriers. I spoke to someone at AT&T and they said the difference between 3g and 2g is like comparing broadband to dailup, this analogy sounds fishy to me and that's why I decided to post. I used speakeasy to test bandwidth and I believe the results will have more validity if all use the same site, but that's completely up to you.

I don't have an n900 (yet) so I'm posting with my wifes Iphone 3gs on AT&T New York City USA (site http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/)
Download - AVG 1175 kbits/s , MAX 1549 kbits/s
upload - AVG 238 kbits/s , MAX 238 kbits/s
Time of day - 10:00 am est

Thanks

N900 HSPA, Finland, Elisa. Near cellphone tower, about 1km to nearest residential house (mostly low warehouses around): 5Mbit/s

500m further up the road, towards city: 2Mbit/s

Inside city, shopping district: 1Mbit/s

Inside city, near appartment buildings meant for students: 5kbit/s

And what do we learn from this? Radio is a shared medium

T-mo USA in the Phoenix AZ are, I'm getting about a megabit/s on 3.5G and full signal.

It seems it pull data down a lot faster, though. I know, network latency, available bandwidth, etc. Still...

T-Mobile (USA) has their 7Mb/2Mb network rolled out in a lot of cities. It seems like its limited to "downtown" areas. I avg. 959Kb/330Kb.

I'd like to thank everyone for posting, I really think this thread will benefit current/future owners of the N900 with trouble shooting and comparing download speeds in there area amongst different carriers.

For myself it seems I need to switch to another carrier (t-mobile in my area) if I'm going to use this tablet for heavy Internet usage. It seems download speed of 100k on att edge network is reasonable for email but I can imagine surfing getting cumbersome.

Keep the posts coming, thanks again.

tested using http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

T-Mobile US, in East Los Angeles
usually 850kbps-950kbps down, 600kbps up
sometimes 400-500kbps down, 500kbps up
but I've also seen a few times 2Mbps down 1Mbps up, not sure it that's program error
