What idiots. Just how do they think that occurs? No one is taking the devices apart and prying the connectors off!

Thank you Texrat. Thank you Nokia. Thank you Nokia Flagship NYC.

I brought my 2 month old N900 into the flagship store today, as I posted earlier I would.

They replaced mine! I think it was an exception the guys made, but they have gained a customer for life.

N95-1,N95-3,N95-4,E51,E71-2,N810,N96 and now N900. This is the reason why I spend more than $500 on Nokia every year.

Little update from someone (who I believe is from Nokia):

Hi *****, thanks for highlighting this one, we have also picked up these comments. Now we have seen that a few reports are coming in that seem to indicate that under certain conditions, the micro-USB port on the N900 may become be detached we have our folk looking into the matter. Product quality is of the utmost importance to Nokia . so anyone who experiences this issue should contact their local Nokia customer care. If the N900 hasn’t been mistreated then our usual warranty applies.
REPLY:
@MarkS - I contacted NOKIA last night but the customer support firmly said it does not appear to be a manufacturer defect and I might have to pay for the repair. Obviously there is not enough information flow down or the support personnel not trained well?

@flydeep we are rolling out to our Care folk now
EDIT: This has been confirmed as official. The messages are from MarkS, who is: Mark Squires, Head of Social Media at Nokia.

EDIT2: New post on another blog: http://www.maemocommunity.com/596/no...icro-usb-port/

I sent the following email to Mark (hopefully I got the right address):

I want to thank you for stepping up and addressing the issue with detaching microUSB connectors. I also want to introduce myself and make sure it's clear where I'm coming from on this.

As you may or may not know I'm a former Nokia employee, in fact one of the first few to get deeply involved with Maemo products. I helped launch the N800 in the US as a product quality engineer and made sure the severe issues we discovered in-house didn't make it into consumer hands (at least not in large numbers).

I was also the first to report the N900 USB detachment. Granted mine was precipitated by an accident as I note in my original article, but as it turns out even normal use (as in charging) has been shown to lead to this failure in as little as 2 weeks after purchase of a production device. No user abuse necessary.

Nokia Care and third party support have been doing both customers and Nokia a disservice by denying some initial claims but I am hopeful based on your engagement that this will improve.

My lengthy design and manufacturing experience tells me that the absolute best solution going forward is to change the design to a through-hole rather than surface mount connector. However, it the detachment of copper lands from the PCB can be solved (and that is possible) that *may* be good enough. But Nokia must understand that the interference fits of male connectors remains a risk.

Do know that while as a Nokia employee the needs of the customers were paramount to how I approached my work, albeit with the expected discretion of an employee. That dedication to Maemo Devices customers continues although in a different role, one that is voluntary. I will still consider Nokia's concerns and in no way am I out to do the company any damage. My belief is that real damage is done when these situations aren't properly managed and escalate into catastrophes.

Anyway once again I appreciate your public acknowledgment and action on the customers' behalf. If I can be of any help let me know.

hey Texrat 1st of all i want to say thank you for all your effort fixing the problem .. i just want to ask u a question regarding the pluging & unpluging situation is it better that when i plug/unplug the wire with the usb port remove it and insert it directly towards the female or its better ( especially when removing) to move it little little bit to the left & right because when i unplug it direct without any movment i feal it needs more pressure ?? .. and regarding the people who are getting fixes or replacements isn't this problem going to encounter them in the next month or so ? im just really so confused by nokia especially u addressed this issue before they release the device & they didn't fix it what a jerks ! .. thanks again man

After the long round of posts here, I called up NOKIA customer service last night and had a long conversation with a rep and his supervisor. The fall out of that conversation was the non-coverage of the warranty. Glad that incident happened, highlighted it at engadget and Mark replied +vely. phew!

Do NOT move the connector from side to side if you can help it. Straight in and out is best. Compressing or filing the prongs on male connectors can help reduce friction.

I can't say if the problem will recur. That all depends on the fix, and I don't know the details unfortunately.

Oh, and I didn't encounter this until after the official release.
