@Frankowitz, testerj, blakboy98,

All of your points are great, on the mark and have been mentioned here before, and promptly blasted by some of the same people posting in this very thread that now suddenly are in agreement. Funny how things change and or hypocrisies evolve.

Anyway, I do hope that the next version IT will be more consumer friendly and not require the average user to have a knowledge of UNIX. For Nokia to move this out of the developer realm and into the consumer spaces, more software designed and aimed at consumers will have to be developed.

My calculations say June 25, 2007.

If you're expecting Windows Mobile or Palm ease of use with the current firmware you'll be disappointed, however if you accept it's currently got warts and are prepared to put the hours in getting up the curve then you'll be happily surprised.

In the future I hope the learning curve is much reduced (if not eliminated) for the more casual users while still allowing "power users" (a class of user IMHO not really suited to Windows Mobile/Palm) to access the device as they can now (xterm, ssh, root access etc.).

I really don't agree. Windows Mobile and Palm have other uses and other limitations.

I think the name "internet tablet" is perfect. If you want a good web browser in a portable form factor than there is no alternative to this product.
No webbrowser on Palm or Windows Mobile is as compatible as Opera on N800, and with less than 800 pixel width, internet browsing is just a terrible experience on Windows mobile or Palm (at least for a lot of websites) .

I also think using the product is really easy. Setting up a WiFi or a Bluetooth connection to your phone is just a few taps (far easier than on a Windows XP Laptop). After that you can just use the web, anywhere , anytime. just wonderful!

I do agree that there is a lot of potential for other uses, that aren't really easy to use, but the browser is the killer application, and it works very very well.
I think the email and rss apps are too limited. Most people will prefer to use web applications (like gmail or google reader)
I also think the VoIP and IM service is useless for most people because of the limited install base of Google talk.
Most people (in Europe anyway) have MSN for IM and skype for VoIP, so yes I think Skype would be a very very good choice for VoIP services on the N800 (and very important for the platform)

If you want an easy platform for consumers to use, don't expect people to install or configure things. The average consumer doesn't install many application (if any). Most people use a PDA, Palm or Windows Mobile phone as a calender/agenda ONLY. (they don't browse the web, they don't watch movies, or listen to music on their phone, they use a laptop and Ipod for that)
The same goes for the IT: most consumers just browse the web on it.

It "could" have been but Milhouse was right about these type of release dates getting delayed... but now after some recalulations it's definately June 25, 2007 if you ask me.

Why would anybody who reads this forum ask you?

( A rhetorical question, BTW. )

Back on topic...

I doubt Nokia had any marketing strategy other than to be the first out with such an appliance that in reality, may be just a means to enhance the functionality of their phones.

After all, that's what Nokia does... It sells phones.

hey Euchre, didn't you just recently swear on your life that June 11th or something was the release date? I was under the impression your credibility in dates dropped by about 100 percentiles LOL

And I say it (release date of Skype for N800) is DEFINITELY NOT June 25. Most likely not even during July! My bet is during August.

The new OS may be released before end of June but Skype will not be part of it.
