The USB port is pulling out of the device for some people who are doing nothing more unusual than plugging/unplugging the USB lead.

I'm not sure how you arrived at that after reading what you quoted. But Pelago answered correctly.

Greetings,

I've been following this thread and this issue close since I noticed it last week. I hope that someone important from Nokia is reading this and will take note of the following.

I live in Canada and had been hoping to get a N900 now that we have a suitable carrier (Wind Mobile). Now, with this uncertainty regarding the quality of the N900 and Nokia's, so far, lack-luster support I've decided to not purchase an N900 and look elsewhere for my mobile needs. Further, as an IT consultant I'll have to recommend that my customers do the same.

I'm wondering if heat also has something to do with it. For instance, in the cases where the connector simply came out with the charger cord; how long was the device on charge?

In any event, simply relying on the tensile strength of surface mount soldered points may no longer be considered "good" engineering.

Strength measurements of soldered joints in electronics are widely used for the assessment of joint quality. However, a variety of experiments, reported in this article, clearly show that a strong relationship between initial strength and joint quality does not exist. Far more important for joint reliability is the resistance of soldered constructions to low-cycle fatigue of the solder metal, caused by thermal expansion differences upon temperature cycling during use. A temperature cycling test is proposed as a standard accelerated ageing method for the prediction of the low-cycle fatigue life of soldered joints in electronics.

That is... Not because of the relatively low melting point of silver solder rather, the normal expansion and contraction of the board it is attached to will compromise the adhesion of the soldered "pads".

So basically Nokia may be full of fish crap and their insistence on the "pad" being the indicator of abuse could end up being their downfall if an expert is ever actually consulted.

I'm considering placing in a ruggedising compound around the female microUSB port. Will let you guys know what comes out of it. Of course i first have to get my hands on one that has sufficient insulating properties so that it doesn't short circuit anything in there.

what i can suggest for users that have there device, follow what textrat posted (sorry forgot to quote) pull the plug, dont move the male plug side by side when unplugging,

if having trouble with plugging the charger/data cable, here the deal. place the device on your palm with the screen facing up, get the charger/data cable, point the male plug to the female port UPWARDS. in this case, you'll have a nice aim to the female port, and will easily know if you're pluging it right. then carefully plug the cable in.

i hope my sugestion is clear coz im not relly good at word to word instructions.

In my case, it took 2 months to get broken.

Things I noticed:
* The usb port was really hard to plug. Far more hard than on n810. Also more hard than the preproduction n900 I got.
* No special treatment, I don't even use the usb port too much (once every 2-3 days to charge the device).
* The "break" incident was: once green light was telling the device was charged, I removed the usb plug, and the female side came with the plug.
* Last days before "break" incident, it happened at least two times that I put the device in charger and it didn't charge. I guess it was already partially broken.

Tomorrow I'm going to the center Nokia Care redirected me. Let's see what they say.
