Does rebooting help? I recall a situation once, when having failed to play an unsupported file, MP refused to play anything else.

No. Its like uninstalling the extra formats deleted other stuff it shouldn't have. wanting to know how to go about reinstalling media player. for example, trying to reinstall the extra decoders I get the message 'application packages missing: gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-extra'

i had the same problem after flashing to the latest firmware, although i do remember that when installing my apps from backup the size of the decoders package was a couple of kb as opossed to the 3.5mb it should be.

mine did uninstall correctly and a reinstall fixed it, i do remember an old thread where the media indexer was causing problems, there was a terminal line used to restart the indexer although i can really search for it now, im supossed to be working lol

happy hunting

I remembered that I'd also about the same time installed ogg support. I uninstalled this and now my Media Player works again :-)
