Version 3.2010.02-8 is the current firmware, and is also called PR1.1.1.
When there is a new firmware update, there will be several news reports on the front page of maemo.org
Also, if it is possible to do an OTA (wireless) update, you will get a notification that leads to the app manager.

By default, your device checks for updates in every day if it is connected to the internet via wifi or 2G/3G.
If any updates are available (doesn't matter that firmware update or 3-rd party software update) you will find a square yellow '!' symbol in your status area.
