I have been really happy about the default settings. Thought my Denon 551 is pretty bass heavy as some where complaining about the lack of it.
I have been actually really happy about the music quality that's on par with my Zune HD and slightly better than my 1G ipod touch. My main problem and really the only problem currently on N900 is lack of portrait in default media player.

IMO I think it's the mids that need boosting.I listen to a lot of rock/metal and it just sounds kind of bland and I can't hear all of the band clearly enough. Needs just a little mid and treble boost.

The equalizer is like, I guess crack cocaine, once touch, very difficult to go back. I like a little bit of bass, and the equalizer just dose it!!! Too the contrary, I set the mid range to -20 db, I know, this is just me , this brings the bass/treble to midrange almost 40 db difference, and bun is in HEAVEN (currently listening to Eric the Clapton, Tears in heaven...)

However, it is really really heavy on the CPU, so anytime when kinetic kicks in, music goes out . If you move or stroke slowly without kinetic kicks in, music stays!

And if you set it flat, use it as a booster, add 20 db to your N900, as mickc puts it, it only use 30 % CPU, nice trick to know. However, distortion is very hi when using +20 db; I tried + 3db, no noticeble distortion and still booted up sound.

And yes, if multitasking, music temporarily goes out too . And this is A big problem, the advantage of N900 is multitask.... if I cannot get around this point, I may have to ditch the equalizer too .......... touch choice.

New music player called Symfonie is out that has a built in equalizer. (extras-devel)

No need for hacking around with the mafw-eq. It's a basic file-level music player based on Qt.
Plays my music fine and the equalizer seems to work great also. But it does use CPU a lot also.

I guess we can't do anything about it as Maemo5 seems to have cpu utilization issues playing MP3's with eq. (pulseaudio or mafw)
I hope the gui gets more tidied up and hopefully it'll get some extra features to make it a very simple and nice mp3 player.

How can I contact this guy? It's a great start that I think we can make into a Strong audio player app.

That is a great player performance-wisr but 60 percent CPU utilization is too much.. Also no support for wav files.

Guess the only way a good EQ would work is for maemo devs to release a built in eq in the next update.

Is there any knowing description about activating this eq?
I followed those "steps" but the difference between preconfigured bands isn't noticeable!

The general utilization of an mp3 with media player is 50%, it this sofware eq will be enabled, will it rounding the cpu on 100%?

...
Go the the highest frequency, ie. to your right side, and crank it all the way down, -20db, you should hear a dramatic difference.
