ok. i tried the commands and kept getting errors so i installed it through application manager and it worked. so now i have to get ssh to work to edit the gprs.chat and rfcomm.conf files.

You can edit the files on the device. For example, run

ok thanks so much for your help. but i get a problem when running those commands. it says not found which leads me to believe that the files aren't there. too bad i cant get ssh to work to see if they are there or not

ssh does not matter in this case. You can do in xterm anything you can do in ssh, the only difference being that ssh allows you to use large screen and keyboard.
Are the files not found or is pico not found?

ok from runing the above code i get
sorry for all the questions. im a newb at this and havent really used xterm much before. thanks so much for your help.
~ $ ls -l /etc/ppp/chat/
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 146 Jan 21 05:38 gprs.chat
~ $ root
and if i run the pico commands i get
BusyBox v1.10.2 (Debian 3:1.10.2.legal-1osso26+0m5) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
Nokia-N900-51-1:~# pico /etc/ppp/chat/gprs.chat
-sh: pico: not found

I'm sorry. You need to install some editor. I think the easiest shoule be nano, but I am not sure in which repository it is. Please try running the two commands:
And then in the edit commands replace pico with nano or with leafpad.
