The amount of confusion surrounding the mapping options for Maemo is almost as great as the Ovi Maps program was disappointing. It's nice to see a conversation about it here. Maybe someone can describe how the osm options fit in.

As for me, the ability to use a map offline is top priority, but it is good to know what app is best when online for convenience.

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?

Fast and very detailed, from the polar circle down to the Canary Islands off Africa...and the rest of the world
The main reason for me is that you need windows to manage the off-line maps. I am still waiting for a mac version of the nokia suite ...

You can also grab the maps without using any additional software. That's what i did. I just grabbed all the areas i expected to need and put them on the phone, and forgot about it. There's a world of difference between this 32 GB monster and my `99 Visor Deluxe...

Nice link.

How on earth do you zoom out? Zooming in is fine (double click using stylus). Panning is fine. But I haven't figured out yet how to zoom out in this!

<off topic> BTW, getting that damn cursor on the N900 is the biggest hit and miss of the century Usually I have to work for around 25-30 times before I finally manage to get that cursor icon visible.

good question... don't know.

@offtopic: I find it quite easy. Just sweep your finger from the left into the screen an then tap the upcoming icon.

Well, I wish it was as easy as it sounds. I know about this method of sliding finger from the left side of the screen (off the screen actually) and then clicking the icon that appears. I have seen enough videos of that too. But when I do the same thing, only thing that happens is the page actually moves towards the right side and then when I lift the finger, it goes back to the edge. I have tried it slowly, fast, without lifting the finger, lifting the finger everything possible. But the "hit-rate" is still something like 1:25

I had two screen protectors earlier. First one was called "privacy screen protector" which was similar to the privacy screen protectors that you get for your laptop (only the person straight in front of the screen can see what's on the screen). I removed that and in the process destroyed it to get this bloody cursor to work. After that the hit rate improved from 1:100 to 1:50! So I gave up. I couldn't use it anyway so I bought a transparent screen protector again and continued with the life

Then I discovered this Google Map Mobile and again it was time to start to bring back that damn cursor to life. So I ruined another transparent screen protector too in the hope of getting this cursor to work. I was so desperate that I put on the YouTube video on one computer and tried to do the same way with the N900! Nothing helped. Still the hit rate is something like 1:25 to 1:30. Believe it or not there are almost small grooves starting from the left edge of the screen towards the center of the screen caused by all this trial and error to get the god-damned cursor to appear!

Well, like my signature says, this is the last Maemo device I have! (Next one is going to be MeeGo ) Let's hope that they have been able to discover a better way to use that cursor by then!
