okay..so i'm in my car...and need to find the nearest auto mechanic...what is the best way to go about that on the N900? I dont need GPS turn by turn..just a map with the nearby auto shops on it..I can navigate from there.

thanks.

don't think it possible man. Unless you entered it yourself and make your own map. Otherwise it beyond the possibility. Not to mention Ovi Map is not capable of doing offline searching either.

if you don't already have it download "maemo-geolocation"

open the browser go to google maps
on the map you should notice there is a little square with a circle in it, above the orange man (streetview) icon.
click it and it will ask for your premission to find your location. when it does just type "mechanic" in the google maps search box.

there is qypy (in extras devel i think --> bin warning!)
it has the exact functions you seem to search..

be aware of all risks
download and install it
just go to: transportation - cars and bikes - garages and mechanics - places
tap on the mechanics you want to see details for
tap on world to see on map or on phone to call them

if i helped you feel free to hit thanks!

Have you tried the NearMe plugin for mobile Firefox?

Brilliant, thanks alot for recomending this.

Been looking everywhere for something that does a decent google maps search based on my location and routes for me.

I really wish any of the other GPS navigators on n900 did this.

Search for any old thing and get results back instead of sifting through POIs.
