Thanks for bearing with me, i'm still very much learning.Apologies for clogging up the thread with this noob query.
Backup program will copy all your user settings, in the event of a flash needed, everything goes back to factory settings if you do emmc too (see wiki - flasher)
When you restore it will ask you to re-install all the apps you had before + the settings....
i use winscp to copy the files (Over my home wireless) - that may take alittle bit of learning

I'd suggest before trying new things that you know how to flash your device and restore
- that way when you really need to do it, you will be comfortable

Sound advise, thank you. I'm unable to go online with my home pc and use a mac as my other computer so i think i'll have to wait untill i have a broadband connection with the pc before i attack this.
Next stage will be getting to grips with reflashing before attempt anything else i think!
Cheers again, have bookmarked those links so i can come back and review at a later date.
edit - you can use joiku to let your pc use your phones connection wirelessly
(Battery drain though!)

Done few minor UI mods.
- Bookmark shortcuts are logos not screenshots of page

What i did to get rid of the borders for the desktop shortcuts was:
start x-terminal
type root
cd /user/share/themes/THEMENAME/images/
and then only renamed the file
ApplicationShorcutApplet.png to ApplicationShorcutApplet.png.old with the mv-command
after that rebooted the phone...
