Hi all,

I'll be getting my Nokia N900 in about two weeks and have been reading through this site a lot, can't wait to get started

Do you have any tips which apps i can't live without and should install right away?
Or maybe other tips that a new user should do from the start(or not)

thanks!
Dave

Kudos to you getting an N900. I'd suggest the following;

-Browse the forums to get to know the general flow of things (e.g. using "search")
-Make sure you update to the newest firmware before doing anything else
-install Healthcheck (http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/healthcheck/) to make sure everything on your phone's working up to spec.

I use the following apps, all of which are from the extras repository, although I'd suggest getting to know your phone before installing them, as they will help you appreciate your phone more.

-Load Applet
-Petrovich
-wifi switcher
-Tweakr
-Conky
-BatteryGraph
-GPSJinni
-Custom Operator Name Widget

There is lots of inormation in the forums here, but the TMO (talk.maemo.org) search engine is the worst ive seen. Instead of searching from inside the forum, use google. For example : sudo gainroot site:talk.maemo.org

I was referring to the end-user repo, which you might recognize as the "Downloads" section. I was not referring to the extras-testing or extras-devel repos.

If you're into listening podcasts, you'll want gPodder (subscribing to podcasts, downloading episodes).

While you're at it, also get Panucci (alternative audio player, designed for podcast/audiobook use case, much better for that than the default media player) and Headphone daemon (automatically pause audio playback when headphones are disconnected).

Edit: here's a thread with some useful usage tips.

I suggest that first apps you install are rootsh and openSSH server (and client if you need it) so if something sometimes goes awfully wrong you might be able to fix your system without reflashing.
