Hi Guys,

I know how to use the proxy setting for any available WIFI but my problem is that when entering the proxy address such as

http://proxy.dcu.ie/proxy.pac

the keypad wont let me type either / nor : I tried to write it in as text message and copy paste it from there but unfortunately I am unable to paste it as well. Any idea what should I do. Many thanks

It looks like it can't be done. Have you filed a Bugzilla report for this?
What happens if you ping that address and put the numerical address only in as the proxy?
To be honest, I've never seen a proxy before that uses an named address with a slash - I've only ever seen all numerical 10.10.10.10 or named e.g. proxy.mycompany.com

Are you sure you have the proxy address right? If you need the slash, it won't work with the N900 currently. Sorry.

Thanks John, the proxy is 100% right. Its from my university (DCU). Friend of mine is using the same address on IPhone and he got the slash working for him on his phone. I have not tried to put the address without the slash but will give it shot next time. On the other hand I was thinking why it is not allowing me to paste the address there. Sometimes Nokia act like as egit.

The proxy setup provided in connection settings will only allow you to directly set specific proxies for particular services using IP address and port numbers.

What you have here is an URL of a so-called PAC (Proxy Auto Configuration) file, which is essentially a JavaScript file that (only) web browsers can use to automatically determine the proxy it should use to satisfy a specific request. They are usually used for ease of configuration in complex networking environments that use multiple (or no) proxies depending on destination and/or to allow network management to move proxies around between various machines with different IP adresses without having to tell everyone to change their browser's proxy configuration manually.

That said, I have no idea if there is some way of making MicroB use PAC. But it should explain why you can't set it up where you're currently trying to.

Looking at your specific PAC file itself, it mostly determines in which cases the proxy should be bypassed (i.e. DCU internal sites) and falls through to tell the browser to either use proxy1.dcu.ie or proxy2.dcu.ie on port 3128.

Those two names resolve to 136.206.1.20 and 136.206.1.49, so you could try to use either of those adresses as proxy setting, with 3128 as the port to use. Theoretically that should at least allow you to access sites outside DCU then, any possible access restrictions notwithstanding.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Chris.

P.S.: If all else fails, you might try to contact Fergus Donohue, who admits to being the culprit for this PAC file in a comment
