what is the command line for and what is possible using it? is this the terminal app?. This maybe a silly question but haven't got a clue and feel left out when people sing their prasies about the command line. Thanks

Have you heard of DOS? Linux and DOS (don't be a hater on a DOS guy now) have at their root, a command line interface (CLI)... That means you enter in a command, and the OS does something (Start/Stop a program, show a directory, accomplish commands that the OS understands) all without a GUI. Terminal is a way for you to get a CLI to the Maemo OS.
What is possible from the CLI? everything!

Yes when people refer to the command line on the phone they are talking about X terminal. There are multitude of useful things to do with it. If you want to learn a little about getting around and making use of the terminal try looking for a tutorial on google or check out this site: http://linuxcommand.gds.tuwien.ac.at/

what sorts of things are you trying to accomplish? its hard to know what to suggest as you can do just about anything without a gui: download torrents, browse the web (without pictures), install applications, edit text files, copy files to or from other computers... it goes on and on

try as a word of warning, be aware of trying commands that people suggest unless you trust the person or have a reasonable understanding of what you are running, its possible to delete important files and do other damage or unwanted side effects with innocent looking commands.

also helps fix the phone when an application screws it up and it will happen so read up on flasher now and xterminal
