You got it pasih. I trolling only againts Nokia, not maemo community or n900 developers. I mean, if pr1.2 fixes it's supposed to fix, then my troll days will gone, because then, and only then, I'll have the n900 I paid for.
I have Sygic, so I don't need ovimaps, neither portrait mode for gui... but I need a n900 without bugs. WE ALL NEED IT... SAYING AMEN TO NOKIA, ALL IS FINE, DOES NOT HELP. N900 is a product, no a way of life.
And the hypes of Ari few weeks ago makes me angry. More work, less trips.
Now,
Cheers.

I'd imagine moderators have enough guidelines to ban individuals who are abusing this facility.

Banning and censorship are surely the last resort and the more mature response to the childish postings would be to tolerate them.

The Whingers and Trolls may be sad individuals, but their combined opinions represent something of how Maemo, Maego, Nokia and the development & politics of our interests are perceived beyond the developer community, even if that perception is mistaken.

Although this forum is not a true democracy, I'm sure we'd all want to uphold democratic values by not attempting to silence the voices of those who do not necessarily share our values.

I think we all come to recognise the degenerate threads quite quickly and can avoid them if we want to.

The poll above is biased and not becoming of a community like ours.

Tolerance and dignity must prevail

i think trolls are a necessary evil to keep an open and fair network such as maemo.org

after all, we don't want to turn this into a dictatorship. do we??

and most of us can detect a troll thread in the first post, so maybe the onus should be on us - the members - to pass the threads on by.

we run the risk of alienating real talent because we develop a reputation for being a dictatorship rather than a freedom-of-speech democracy.

just my op

That doesn't help either. It will land in their trash and no one will hear about the problem. There must be an open place where such problems are visible to everyone.

Jesuska, sorry, but you forgot the money concept. I don't want to show the light to Nokia, but aware potential buyers that something is wrong at n900 born... if they fix it, ok, if they don't... yesterday my fifth friend was oriented to buy non-Nokia phone.
Anyway, I will do, like you, what I want, not what I was toled to do.

deleting unwanted stuff would be the apple way. i don't think we're quite there yet.

but i do think that threads with obviously bad intentions should get closed. IMHO that's enough to keep trolls away. once they realise they can't provoke any reaction (because no one can answer to their threads), they'll leave soon.

If a troll's thread grows, it may be your fault if...

1. You participate by responding to that thread. By doing this you feed them attention and you bump it up so it attracts the attention of more readers.

2. You read the thread and let it affect your emotion. Without sufficient control, you're bound to respond to it, which will also feed the trolls. (ie: creating threads like this )

Forum moderation is one thing, but one of the strengths of this forum is that moderation is kept to a minimal to encourage communication and ideas exchange at all levels.

If we all act like grown ups, no one needs to call up their parents to straighten anyone up. If you find someone immature, don't go down to their level and start slinging muds to each other; be the adult and lead by example.

Since we're all trolling in a trolling thread, let me say some things.

(1) First off, some of you are really ignorant, and behaving childish to boot. This forum is not a Nokia company forum. They have one, and if your intent is to whine/complain/agitate/disrupt/troll/bother/etc. Nokia, then this is not the place. The only people whose time you waste doing that here are other users and those who volunteer (or in a few cases are paid) to work on Maemo-related issues. Again, maemo.org is not Maemo and not owned or operated by Nokia.

(2) To those agitating for more control of the forum, i suggest you look into its origins and previous discussions of the matter. Reggie has a very hands-off approach to moderating, and in general the rest of us follow that lead. In the few cases where we (moderators) try to draw the line a bit closer to where it would be in many other fora, we're met with opposition by those who don't want this anything but a free community. I don't need crap from useless curmudgeons in my life, but i face it every time i try to deviate from the free-for-all in my moderation.

(3) Yes, it would be nice if Off-Topic didn't show up in Active Topics. That is, after all, the exact place you're talking about: it already exists. The starter of this thread is doing nothing to help the problem because he should have started this thread either in Off-Topic if it's another pointless bit of failed satire, or Community if he was serious about it.
