My user manual states that the max mem for this device is 1G. Will the OS recognize a 2G chip, and if not, can I still partition? Thanks in advance.

Yes, 2GB is supported with the latest OS 2006 firmware (v3.2006.49-2) on the 770.

From the 770, how do I tell which version it is running?

From the Application Menu (ie. the boxes icon below the two people on the left) select Tools -> Control Panel -> About product.

"Version" is what you're looking for.
