ok I did alot of reading, so I hope this isn't already answered. I have windows 7, and my ultimate goal is to use VNC to remote into my desktop over the internet.

I have realvnc server (free version) on my desktop. and the vnc viewer app on my n900.

obviously when I enter my internet facing ip address (From www.whatismyip.com ) and use port 5900, it doesn't work.

does anyone have either steps or advice for me to get it working?

Of course not. If like most people you're using a router (and I really hope you are) that's only the external IP the router shows the world, not the actual, protected IP of the machine behind the router you're trying to connect to. So in effect, you're only connecting to the router, it won't allow you past it. That's why routers add security.

You need to run ipconfig on the machine you want to connect to and get it's IP. Then setup the router to foward that IP. You also need to open port 5900 as it should be closed by default. Actually, I'd setup VNC to use a slightly different port, say 5905 or 5925, something a little off the default 5900 just to help throw off simple script kiddies.

Logmein works for me but is unusably slow. My vnc server will only work in the web browser on a PC so I stick to Remote Desktop

Not offhand. VNC has always worked fine for me. Possibly it's not waking up the host? Try logging into the host first then connect and see what you get. Otherwise I don't know what to tell you except maybe go into options and try changing the display settings.

The RealVNC free edition isn't currently supported on Vista or Windows 7 - I think it should work when run by the user, but not when run as a service (I can't remember the details though - I'm still on XP so haven't paid a lot of attention). You could look at one of the other VNC versions - UltraVNC claims support, and there's a beta of TightVNC which should work as well.
