What's the current state with go-playing software on the N900? I'd quite like to have something, and would probably be interested in making something myself.

I doubt porting gnugo is any work at all, probably you could just take a debian package as it is, optify it and it will work. But gnugo itself has no GUI, so it's only of limited use on the N900...
What I would be interested in is a good go playing GUI application. Has anyone looked into porting qGo? Shouldn't be too hard, since it's QT. I tried qGo2 myself in scratchbox, and it compiles without problems as it is, but it's pretty unusable on the small screen. The GUI has to be completely redesigned.
Once we have a working go GUI, I'll volunteer to port gnugo
EDIT: There is goban770 in extras-devel, but that's just an SGF editor, not a go playing software.

Looks like gGo (java) works fine. IT's a great app for desktop anyway. And it looks it might work for n900 
Just need /usr/bin/gnugo... :/

OMG!! I'm starting to freak out about this Maemo platform :-))))
GNU Go works I really didn't think it was SO EASY
INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDING COMMAND LINE ACTIONS:
1) go to Debian site, and download Lenny package for armel
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/armel/gnugo/download
2) Open gnugo_3.7.12-1_armel.deb
(in Debian one can use MidnightCommander... maybe works in mc for n900)
3) copy usr/games/gnugo from unpacked deb file into your n900
You can use scp gnugo user@n900:/opt/usr/games/
(and before that: mkdir -p /opt/usr/games/)
4) install Java. You can download embeded edition from Sun (link and version of Java here:

Also, install it somewhere in /home/user and not /home/user/MyDocs/, as it requires to create some symlinks which are not supported on MyDocs partition
5) download, unpack and run gGo http://www.pandanet.co.jp/java/gGo/
5) configure gGo's path to gnugo
6) Play))
In case of any trouble I can assist. Though it looks like some proper maemo deb package could be made, so users can get it via App Manager

Hmm. I'm still tempted to make something native with zooming, etc... that doesn't look especially playable with a 19x19 board.

Indeed a native Go game would be nice to have availible. Could probably get a few new players to appreciate the game even
Tried qgo2 which compiled fine. But needs major UI work and unfortunatly i lack the skills atm to even know where to start to change

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?
