Aggressive responds somehow remind me of the term 'sore loser', even if there's no 'winner' or 'loser' in this environment.

I've never seen anyone I respect respond to others in a rude or unkind way, however bad the circumstances are.

Isn't the lack of paid app support in the OVI Store really the biggest issue here?

Rovio is the only company to develop high quality games on the N900 so far. They are now refusing to give us anything else until OVI Store is fixed. Simples.

The one serious paid app released was by Sygic. They did it from their own site and their servers nearly died in the process.

OVI Store needs fixing because, other than the geeks to whom we are all grateful for their apps, nobody will put effort into developing the sort of apps that made the iPhone the toy that it is.

This attacking of anyone who posts against the N900 has got to stop. This forum is for discussion. Hiding behind a keyboard and calling somebody a jackass because they happen to disagree with you leaves only one person looking like a jackass. Learn some *&%£ing manners.

WTF is this thread doing in Maemo 5 / Fremantle? Move to Off-Topic or possibly N900 section please.

I think Nokia is finally moving in the right direction with QT though. They aren't leaving the N900 out by moving to MeeGo, as both will support the same applications (thanks to QT). Nokia is getting there, but a bit slower than most, but their approach might make them them better than the opposition once QT really takes off as any application written in it will be able to run on the N900 with some minor adjustments. Its for this reason I don't really care if they bring MeeGo on the N900, I'll still be able to enjoy the apps. At the moment though, its sadly lacking the apps that are found on the iPhone or other platforms.

Lastly, can't we all kinda grow up and stop insulting people for voicing their opinions. If you don't like what he's saying, then don't respond with stupid comments, don't respond at all.

I have no time to read whole story, but who excactly needs own software for ebay or nimbuzz? Was nimbuzz existence just because skype and msn? Both can be installed to N900 and skype is already there. eBay can be accessed from browser or touchsearch.

Have nice iPhone time. I think its one of the best phones but when it comes to multiple usage handheld its different story.

Hoefully this will be the last upheaveal Nokia performs.

If Nokia and us want more applications available for the platform then next thing that is needed is stability and steady management is desperately needed.

Android and iPhone are trailblazing ahead of anyone else, reaping the rewards of an active application pool and enjoying financial success.

At the moment Nokia is completely locked-out and looking with envy at these two platforms.

The longer Nokia delay the harder it gets to compete effectively in the smartphone market.

Nokia had better get OVI store fixed before MeeGo is usable on the n900 because other competitors who are also using MeeGo will leave Nokia way behind.

As a consumer I will happily jump ship to someone else who can treat me and my hardware purchase better.

Nice one bjknight, I couldn't agree more....

Whilst it is a lovely "device" (because apparently I can't call it a "phone") I can also see clearly how it wont be for everyone. I have no experience in linux or open source software and this is a baptism of fire, albeit one that I particularly enjoy. In at the deep end, sink or swim, the choice is yours.

johnel makes some very pertinent points too, reference the app testing (yes I do have -devel enabled and run through some apps in it, though my time is limited) - it would seem that the main reason for a lot of people migrating away from the N900 and attempting to smear campaign against the "device" is purely because of the lack of apps.

Now, the problem with apps is that this is a one-off "device" carrying a one-off OS. As such you can't necessarily formulate an Affordable Business Case (ABC) for software development as the target audience is more niche than mainstream, and only one device has the OS. This already severely limits any business opportunities that major companies can see.

However, and this is the BIG BUT, this community appears to have more than its fair share of consumate professional devs and coders, meaning that the apps that do get generated are free, rather than the locked-down-have-to-pay-for Apple apps. This in turn makes this place even better, dependant on what you want out of your "device". Not sure that there is a single app that I miss - although my previous phone was an N95, and remained just that, other than being debranded and given the latest Nokia FW rather than the Vodafone one that was about 4 iterations behind.

I dont have many wants. I want to be able to take respectable photos, make phone calls, check my mail, surf the net and watch movies. The "device" does that for me more than adequately. I'm a happy man.

By very much the same token, the OP berty started this thread simply to voice his opinion, which he is entitled to, and I don't believe that his priginal post was intended to be malicious, instigative or in any other way negative. Maybe flaming posters should consider the tone of the OP's words before engaging in straight flaming. Learn some manners.

Sounds like most agree with my comments apart from the one liner "Jack ***" comments. I'd like to stick with this device, but don't think it will go much further unless the QT thing brings us a load of apps which I can't see happening anytime soon.

In future I'll be buying devices that have been out for a year or so and been proven to be worthwhile and supported. I'm happy to pay for my apps 59p here, £1.59 there won't break the bank, I don't think it's down to the end user to make their own. Yes I can use ebay on the main browser but it's very fiddly messing about with the stylus jabbing as carefully as possible to get the right link you need etc. The iphone ebay app is perfect for my needs with no fuss.

I think the thing that may have put me off the most is the absolute silence from Nokia on all people's issues. This is from the N97 to the N900, I foolishly spent £1,000 on toys that are not up to the task they were intended for.

Again I'm not slating the device, would be nice if there was a try before you buy program available where you could have the phone for a week or two before commiting to £500. Some people say don't buy it if you don't like it, but you have to buy it to find out if you like it. There's only so much info you get get from reading reviews.

Interesting concept the 'walled garden'.

Apples wall garden brings stability to the phone, support from the manufacturer, a place to buy apps, support and development backed by and run by the manufacturer. Who go to great lengths to protect and keep their phone the number one. Who throw money at upgrades and support for those upgrades and are regularly advertising and shoving it down the throats of the planets citizens. An app store of 90000+ apparently. With support from main street banks (Natwest), energy suppliers (British gas) etc. And if you jail break to unlock from the walled garden you can do some extra stuff like play your own music etc.

Now compare that to Nokia. A couple of firm ware updates, not much added in each of them beyond stability tweaks. Little or no professional development of the app store, next to no adfvertising campaigns and little or no change given the many threads saying how pants the phone is. And our app store numbers in the hundreds, assuming you don't filter out film clips and short movie clips. None of which is a main stream commercial interest. Everything I have downloaded and use is to provide basic functionality, Or has been downloaded because I have had to "jailbreak" (Using root) my phone and use the linux command line to copy down ported versions of stuff I have on my ubuntu desktop. Which I also had to add repositories to do.

So is a walled garden better?

Everyone mutters about the number of threads slagging off the N900, but if Nokia don't up their game and respond. What are people to do? I do find it funny and a little hypocritical that everyone jumps onto threads like this, saying how they shouldn't have posted and that there are already long threads saying the same thing. Yet these people feel the need to say the same thing again on this thread, when they already said their comments on those other threads. Doing the same thing that they are blaming others for doing.

Personally I can't stand Jobs and got a N900 to avoid Jobs' and Googles' monopoly, but they do get things working. Though I am resisting the garage sale of my N900 until HTC brings out a decent qwerty phone that uses Android (And I will sell my soul to google if it works)
