Hi All,

couldn't find this in the archives so not sure if its been asked before, but I want to use my tablet at work but there is no wi-fi at work (heathens!) so how can I coonect my tablet to my PC and then use the wired LAN on my PC onwards ?

just tried connecting in ad-hoc peer-to peer mode (and they connect fine I think) but the tablet can't then go on the web.

any suggestions ?

Thanks
David

You'll need to enable some form of internet connection sharing. It's built in to Windows and can be set up via the Internet Connection Wizard --- not sure what to tell you on other OSes, but it can be done.

Hopefully there's some way to password internet connection sharing on windows. Otherwise you're opening up a pretty big security hole in your work's network. We confiscate equipment here for doing that.

The Adhoc Network Wizard in Vista, at least, sets it to WEP by default. Can't do beyond WEP with Adhoc, AFAIK, anyways.

I followed these instructions and it worked. Make sure all Firewall is either off or allowing your 770 to connect. Advice is to try turning firewall off first to check connection. Once connected, then tweak your firewall.

WEP's probably okay for short time ad-hoc networks. Just remember 128bit can be cracked in less than 2 minutes.

Damn right. We do the same here and regularly ride around scanning for unauthorized APs, which really means ANY APs.
Also, if the MAC address isn't registered then it's NOT going anywhere on the network.
It would be best if you approached your IT folks with the idea of a secured wi-fi network utilizing WPA2 and RADIUS combined with MAC address filtering beyond the AP at the switch/router.
If they babble about how unsecure wi-fi is, then they're *****s.

Mac spoofing is pretty trivial. I've been using my Zaurus' mac address all day at work today. Our net admin was busy writing up a report for our boss and my new macbook pro came in. She didn't have time to add the new address. Quick command in the terminal, and ta-da! Wifi works till she gets the new mac entered.
