Personally I wanted to be able to create notes in my own handwriting rather than just plain text that the current widgets allow, so I used a different approach.
I decided on a background image for the desktop that I wanted to put the stickynote on, and attached a picture of a blank sticky note onto the background image. Now all I have to do is open up the background image in mypaint, write/draw whatever I want on it and then set this new modified picture as my background image.
Hope that makes sense.
Here's the background image to hopefully make what i'm saying clearer

Or you could just make really, really tiny stickies and place them on the screen.
