Yup, the learning curve here is very steep. My advice is to take it steady, get used to using the device first and only then start looking at the more advanced aspects of Nokia 770 ownership. There are instructions for becoming root (use the forum search and you'll find them). As for xterm, you can install it from the Application Manager.

Seriously though m8, I'd chill with the advanced stuff until you're more at ease with the Nok.
thanks to everybody, i will learn more before do thinks like the mmc boot
is just that i fear the WSOD, it have repair?

Your chances of getting a WSOD are the same whether you try the MMC boot trick or stay booting from internal flash... anytime you reboot your 770, if it's from the affected "middle" batch you have a 50/50 chance of getting a WSOD.

Original 770s and later 770s don't seem to suffer from the WSOD which seems to be a problem Nokia introduced during the mid part of the production cycle and fixed after a few months. Or at least, that's the way it seems. Can't really tell for sure, as there's no way to tell an early model from an mid or late model. Unless it gets a WSOD of death of course...

Correct, there is no way to avoid it. The problem seems to affect certain batches of 770, rather than all of them.

From experience on this forum, 770s from the initial launch period (Nov 2005) do NOT seem to suffer from the WSOD.

Then, at some point early in 2006, the WSOD problem began to appear and once Nokia finally understood the problem they fixed it on the production line - this means that 770s manufactured late in 2006 (after the fix) do NOT have the problem.

Of course this is all guesswork based on information in this forum - maybe ALL 770s are identical. Nobody outside of Nokia knows for sure.

Unfortunately it seems that the "cheap" 770s may have come from this middle batch, or at least _some_ of the cheap 770s came from this "middle batch". I really hope they don't all have the potential for WSOD otherwise this cheap 770 bonanza is going to turn into a very unhappy experience for a lot of users.

See this post:

At poweron (iirc especially after an unclean power off) there is a chance that a current too high will flow through the LCD.

I don't know if the fact that it happened once on a certain unit makes it more likely to happen again or, instead if it is completely random.

But it is _not_ related to wearing. It can happen on a brand new device as it can happen on a well seasoned one (I had it after 18 months).

The only way to reduce the risk is to minimise the powercycles.
Basically, when you turn on the device there is a chance that a chip in the LCD panel will be burned out by too high current which is due to a design flaw in the device.

I don't know of a way tell them apart. It's been assumed (at least on my part) there are different production runs (early, mid, late) but it's equally possible all devices are identical with no differences, all with potential to WSOD and it depends how lucky/unlucky you are.

The term powercycle is used to describe what happens when you switch off and then switch on your device.

so its better dont turn off, and just close the lid when i dont want to use it (like a sleep mode) and never turn off (and beware with the battery charge)

Yes, that's the point Igor is making - try not to power down your 770 and you reduce the chance of falling victim to a WSOD which only happens when you power on the device (and only if you're unlucky).
