Actually, I think you need a special charging cable. Normal data cables don't always work

Do you mean the wall charger? Mine says 1.2, but yours may be different. I have not seen any USB charger put out more than 1amp.

As far as I can tell from data I've found (only one place so not very reliable) the DC-6 outputs 550mA so a 1A USB charger would be preferable.

Just having a source of 5 volts isn't enough. I bet the pictured adapter would have worked with an adapter with a Nokia pin out.
Actually it's not a Nokia directive but an EU commission standard now. I found success with some of the newer leads for Balckberry's too - worth a try.

I guess I don't know why the Nokia AC adapter has to be wired differently than a computer USB port to just supply 5 volts to charge a battery.

My wall charger is also rated 1.2 amps. I was reading off the wrong adapter.

Is there anything wrong with a generic car charger? When i was buying it the guy took a look at my phone and said are you sure want to buy this for your phone? something about the new batteries, it might damage my battery or phone.

Best to go for a branded make that's decent quality to be on safe side and one that's not going to damage your phone!

i tested nokia's own dc-6, which is listed as compatible for the n900 but it doesn't seem to supply enough power if you want to use gps and listen to music in the car. if you do, the battery discharges slowly. the dc-6 puts out about 500mA.

i bought the following adapter for only 4$ and it works nicely with the n900. also, it puts out 1A which seems to be enough (your nokia wall charger has a current of 1.2A).much cheaper than nokias dc-10.

this is the charger i bought: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.26327 (that one was posted before in another thread). delivery might take 2 weeks or so.

cheers

Hi all, am reading this forum around 2 months or so, but iv decided to write my frist post today .

First off all i must admit am total newbie at Linux,i mean total and i hardly understand what everyone is tallking here in areas of making programs , making changes to the device etc...

I want to buy a car charger , but i am confused with all these posts about different car charges and warning messages about chances to damage the N900..

I want while charging the N900 in my car to use the Sygic maps and listen music via FM transmitter,i can spend up to 35 $ for car charger.

I putt safety in first place...so i am wondering what car charger can provide this for me for price up to 35 $...

Ty in advance for any advice's...

as far as i know if 2 middle pins are not shorted it will make no difference supplying more ampers as then phone thinks it is connected to "regular" usb port and will not draw more than 500mA. Only when two middle pins are shorted - phone recognizes that a proper charger has been connected and allows more current to flow.
So as long as you are using regular usb cable together with car adapter it does not matter if you can supply 500mA or 2A cause the phone will not recognize it is a charger and will draw no more than 500mA anyway.
