Apple argues that it is, and petitioned against a DMCA exception for Jailbreaking. Certainly it isn't worth their time or money to pursue it, but they could whenever they felt it was.

My point, however, is that you have to -fight- Apple for control of your property. I don't want that fight. I especially don't want what Motorola does to their non-Milestone/DROID devices.

At least carriers supply it.
Whether carries supply it is immaterial, so long as the vendor makes it available. Certainly, that's one thing I do like about Nokia is not being -forced- to go through a carrier.

Yeah like with Nokia and PR 1.2... making us wait for so long and ditch MeeGo.
Do you mean that they ditched Maemo, which you say just as PR1.2 comes out? I would hold off on any ditching comments, especially with the N900 just now popping up in other countries.

At least the iPhone has updates for a few years
Guaranteed obsolescence cycle, however. Though you might be able to migrate to android once the App Store starts blocking your device

I just do not understand. MeeGo 1 was released into the wild for the N900 developers on May 25th. It's going to take a year until there is a useful product for the masses and Nokia has allocated manpower for the project. Maemo 6 is NOT MeeGo so therefore does not share the same cycle of development nor manpower (except for two people if memory serves...). That is a fact of life. Nokia will not change their business model unless it proves to profit them.

Well, maybe not that extreme, but they did come kind of close with their "Vista capable" crap they tried to pull. Vista sucks regardless, so why you'd want to install it on anything is beyond me...

I am all for healthy debate, but I do think this topic is doomed to fail...

MeeGo...is a completely new and different OS
Nokia do not have to offer it free to anyone.

As someone else said, its like saying to Microsoft...why have they not updated Windows Vista users to Windows 7 for free?....
Microsoft offer updates to Windows Vista, and thats all yout entitled to....
If you want Windows 7, ya gota pay for it.

Putting all that aside....just because its new and shiny, does not mean its better!
And having said that, to what I have seen so far, the Maemo UI is far far nicer than MeeGo....I mean, crappy old fashioned tabs? How original.

And with QT, what does it matter, now that apps can be coded to work on both, meaning Maemo will never become extinct.

I would rather have an awesome, complete Maemo, than a ugly, buggy, and incomplete MeeGo.

Since it's the future of Nokia OS, or it'll be the "flagship OS"
id expect it'd be better than Maemo someday,
kinda dissapointed the didn't keep the promise

Symbian^4 will be the flagship OS. MeeGo and S40 are for niche markets

How long were you planning on keeping the n900 as your primary device?
