It is not Nokia's responsibility to tell you that the Mac skype client is not up to date

I called a contact who has Skype 4.1 on Windows earlier today. The video call button was there, but the video didn't work. I'm having them download 4.2 and will try again.

As I've mentioned previously, if you disable and reenable the skype account on the N900, you should be able to IM offline contacts. I think it reverts to being broken after a reboot, though.

Edited to add: I can now confirm that yes, it works great as long as the other person has Skype 4.2.

It would have been nice of them to tell us that the N900 version was not (backwards? whatever) compatible with a significant proportion of the existing skype user base. That includes everyone that I know on skype right now.

I'm not really concerned with their communication (in this instance) it would just have been great if the final product hadn't been so limited in its scope.

It's probably on skype's end since they developed the add on. They'd obviously built it to be compatible with their latest product. It would be nice if Skype told their existing user base to upgrade. Better yet, it would be nice if Skype didn't shaft their Mac and Linux users.

You really can't blame Nokia here

Exactly; it is so clear that Skype is a Skype product that I really fail to see how people can get angry at Nokia!

Amazing...

To these people I'd like to ask: what other phone can make Video calls (with Skype, Gtalk and SIP) out there and that actually work "better" as you're complaining?

Complaining is easy, but ever you thought about the rationale behind a decision?

I am so astoundingly frustrated with skype - I'm having the same problem other people in the thread have mentioned:

a) no video calling options despite it being enabled in my settings and the other person having a webcam, the latest version of skype and a windows 7 pc.

b) the option to IM someone if they're offline or invisible on skype is gone completely. the ONLY way I can do it is if I go into conversations, tap the menu, choose the "send IM to.." option and manually enter their skype username.

c) if I don't log out of skype on my phone first before I log in on my PC, it will sync my chat logs between skype and the phone...an awesome feature on PR 1.1.1, but on PR 1.2 if I'm the last person to have said anything in the conversation, it corrupts the IMs on my N900 and thinks I'm sending IMs to myself with the "internal error" message on the convo. deleting the convo and thus losing the logs is the only fix.

disabling and re-enabling and even deleting and re-creating my skype account on my N900 doesn't fix it at all and I didn't re-apply my backup after I did the OTA update so I'm not sure if that might help...I'm considering downgrading back to PR 1.1.1, because at least that was reliable for me...not being able to IM offline or invisible skype contacts is just ridiculous.

I have a problem with Skype & Gtalk video call between me and my friend both using N900 through WLAN....

1- I start Video call Skype option to my friend who is online.
2- Connecting , and I see my face (through front camera which papering in the screen.
3- When my friend start to click on Camera option to start video call from his side, it is hanging and voice going tearing, and eventually disconnected.

I tried with Gtalk and Skype and the same problem exist.
