this email widget looked like a really useful time-saving feature, but if it doesn't work with nokia messaging, it's useless to me.

i have the same issue. I have configured gmail and hotmail via Nokia Messaging...but none show in the widget. How can they not even test such a simple thing!

They've said it's unable to be fixed due to legal reasons. They're making it sound like displaying your email header info is a violation of gmail/hotmail terms of service or something (really, I don't know what they're trying to say...). This doesn't make any sense as other phones supporting Nokia Messaging (e71) do this just fine.

The widget on the n900 and the notification on the e71 are in no way similar.

You missed the most important thing

Messages received in Nokia Messaging accounts, if any, are not displayed in
the applet. Only a Nokia Messaging Header row is displayed, showing the total
amount of new messages for all Nokia Messaging accounts. Tapping on the header
row opens the Nokia Messaging accounts list. The row is always displayed last
in the list.
The problem is with the way Nokia Messaging handles emails.

A potential solution would be to make a Nokia Messaging widget like symbian phones use. As for legality, the n900 gets yahoo mail through Nokia Messaging. If you want it directly, you have to pay for yahoo plus

uhh, that's kind-of the point.

installing nokia messaging on the e71 gives you a home screen "widget" that shows totals for all accounts you have linked to your messaging account. it also shows the subjects for however many of the most recent emails it can fit on the screen, usually 1-3 messages depending on what other notifications are active.

I GUESS THIS IS IN NO WAY SIMILAR BECAUSE IT ACTUALLY WORKS LIKE WE WANT

anyways, my point was that they obviously *CAN* do what we're asking, because this 2 year old phone can do it just fine. I don't believe them when they say it's impossible due to legal restrictions.

Here's some screenshots so you can see how impossible it is:

I don't really understand your point, are you trying to defend them by saying they made some (stupid) design decisions that limits the functionality of the widget to being a useless shortcut to the actual email application?
