so i was using my n900 today and all of a sudden the touch screen started acting strange. Sort of like it was not responding properly to touches. I would click something with a finger press, but the press wouldnt do anything, only half click. i.e. i would click the alt-tab button to show all open apps, but it would only highlight the button, like it would if i were to press and hold the button. Pressing elsewhere does not release the orignal press, i have to lock, then unlock the screen before the touch screen will register a new press. I ran tscalibrate from xterm, and it registers 1, 2, and 4 fine, but 3 has great difficulty.

I really dont know how to elaborate further, or what to do, i dont want to warranty replace but i can if i have to, its only one month old. I definitely did not abuse the touch screen, it is in perfect condition, no scratches no blemishes.

For the computer scientists out there (read devs i guess) the touch screen issue i am experiencing is basically like it only registers the mouse down, but never the mouse up event. Therefore a click never occurs and all i can do is just press something. It allows me to scroll the desktop, but since i cannot mouse up, i can never cause the desktop to switch to the next screen. strange behavior indeed, i hope its now a faulty touch screen, but please inform me if this is a known issue.

p.s. there is no screen protector on my device, it is stock hardware.

Sounds like it could be a hardware or software problem. I guess you already tried rebooting?

Had a similar problem awhile back. I thought it could be a faulty digitizer and so i ordered a new one.. But then i reflashed the whole thing and it its been fine.
So maybe try to reflash?

Definitely reflash with a emmc and image. Just to get a 100% fresh OS to rule out software.

If that doesn't fix it, sent it for warranty if you have one.

yea, i will definitely be trying a reflash, probably just do the image first, rather not have to reflash the emmc if i don't have to. Really happened with poor timing, as i am on vacation and thought why bother lugging a giant laptop around when i can do all the email/browsing i want with this handy n900. now i am stuck, relatively out of contact with everything. Since i am forced to use public computers (without installation priviledges) i have no way of even attempting a reflash until i make it back home.

the flasher program doesn't appear to have a portable version, but i was able to simulate such a beast by extracting the contents of the msi and putting it all in the same directory. I uploaded the contents here: http://stashbox.org/manage_file/934566/flasher35.zip (for anyone else brave enough to follow i guess haha). I am really unsure of how safe it would be to attempt a reflash like this. If anyone can give me some feedback with their thoughts on this and how dangerous it may or may not be please do. I don't NEED my phone at all on vacation, so i don't want to do anything irreversible.

Well, despite the flasher appearing to function fine in "portable" mode, Vista/7 still requires the nokia usb rom drivers to be installed. I think these are the nokia cable connectivity drivers, not sure tho. If it is, i have those extracted from its MSI file, but not enough of a windows guru to know how to manually install usb drivers or if it is even possible to do such a thing without admin privs. In the end i guess i will just wait until i get home to reflash and see what happens.

@jostefan13 can you tell me where you got the digitizer, how much it costed, and where to find directions on how to remove/replace it? If i have to go down that road, might as well grab some info from someone who's already been there (or close to it at least).

update:

I reflashed, first just the fiasco image, but then both emmc and fiasco. End result, no change in touch screen situation. So hopefully nokia will warranty this. definitely not happy, but if nokia doesn't scew me over on this i will chalk it up to a random defect.

Any recommendations on how to get a nokia warranty repair job done (in canada) ?

Update: DO NOT SEND YOUR N900 TO NOKIA'S CANADA REPAIR CENTER. They will tell you they cannot touch it and basically waste your time. VERY unhappy about all this because i never would have sent it to them if the warranty checker page would have told me "BTW YOUR PHONE IS USA REPAIR ONLY, GO **** YOURSELF"

sorry for the rant, i'm just fuming mad at nokia right now. If i knew this was going to end up like this from the beginning i would have just done the repair job myself. What bothers me the most is that i talked to TWO different nokia reps, both had my IMEI and my phone model. Neither seemed to feel inclined to inform me that I would get *** raped later.
