Hi
After looking at this tablet for several months, I couldn't resist anymore, I bought one
I'm from France and been using Linux/Unix for 15 years or so, and debian for 2 years.
1 hour before buying it, I looked at the thread about cards corruption which frightened me. But as a kid, nothing could change my mind anymore..
When I went in the shop, the guy told me:
>Ah yeah we have it, it's hidden behind the iPods.. We ordered it by mistake we though it was a phone. MMmmmh you do know it's not a phone?
>Yeah yeah I just buy it because of the penguin on the back of the box.
People looked at me like if I was coming from Mars

So far, after 1 day of playing I am very impressed by the n800. After an hour, I updated the firmware. All went ok.
I have several questions though.

1) At home I don't have a wireless internet AP. And the only working wireless computer can not get to the internet (problem about dhcp that I have since a year or something). Anyway, I wanted to download debs packages and transfer them manually to the n800. I was not able to install this damned vte and ncurses libraries. "imcompatible application". I managed to install a lot of other packages, maybe 50 in a day But I really would like this xterm stuffs.
Ok now I'm at work and I will connect to the internet so the application manager will do the job. But as a curious person I would like to know which one I should download, take vte for example. I went to the package list for bora (is it really bora? ), checked the name of the packages and then went into repository.maemo.org/pool and took everything but no way.

2) Then I wanted to connect my debian to the n800. Was not able because I don't know how to set the IP of the n800. When connected it says "connected with ip-local". Greaaat what's ip-local? I will not install a dhcpserver on my debian but would like to know if its possible to set the IP?

3) Dropbear or sshserver, what's the difference? They are installed but due to 2) I can't connect to the n800

4) possible to ssh over Bluetooth? Humm?

I managed to crash the n800 by running "fractal cpu test" once and had to switch off/on. After rerunning it several times, not able anymore to crash it.

I'm planning to develop for this n800. I mean its a bit the purpose of the n800 I guess.. I saw some tutorials on maemo website I'll have a look. If somebody has some good links, it could help me.

Great forum, thanks.

2) Control panel -> Connectivity -> Advanced

3) Dropbear is a reduced functionality version of ssh, designed for small memory devices however openssh runs fine on both 770 and N800 and doesn't cause any memory problems, and it provides a lot more functionality (scp etc.)

I really suggest you get your wireless connectivity sorted out... N800s are a lot less fun without wireless. A wireless access point doesn't cost much these days and the expense would be worth the time you're now spending trying to overcome the lack of an AP.

Thanks

Yes I realize now it's much more fun. Since 2 hours I'm installing everything as I am at work. This n800 has greatly diminished my productivity
I'll try to hijack the XP of my gf which is the only one connected to internet and replace it with my debian to make a gateway.
And then I'll buy an AP, I need one with at least 2 ethernet ports because her PC has no wireless.

Poor gf won't have much attention this evening. n800 has the priority

Now I need to setup the ssh server. I've seen how to do it with public/private key in this forum.
But yesterday I also saw somewhere "adduser" but which repository (and the line for sources.list) am I supposed to put? Would be quicker meanwhile. I'm unable to find it again.

1) Just two short remarks:
- Not all debs one may find somewhere in the wild in a folder named N800 or bora or maemo can indeed be installed on an ITT. For instance, neat apps contacts and dates have some dependencies which are not fulfilled if you install the newest rtcom-beta.
- As of ncurses, I had huge problems after making the mistake of installing ncurses-bin from one of the repositories. (You may find some comments on this package in this forum.) Neither apt-get install -f nor apt-get remove ncurses-bin helped, I ended up reflashing the device.

And a N800 without a wireless access is indeed just half of the fun.

Ok thanks.
Today
apt-get upgrade all failed (some overriding files and some errors in post/pre-inst script due to mv, ncurses-bin was one)
Really looks like a real debian

And yes I know for the network. But I still have a lot of fun connecting my linux to my n800.

Do you guys update packages often?
