I know it's a hardware issue. Someone said that it was a video chipset of some sorts. Has anyone tried to physically repair or replace this chipset? I've just gotten tired of reading and seeing Nokia screw people and not fix a design flaw. And if anybody wants to donate their paperweight, I will try and see what I can do. Nothing to lose if it's already broke and out of warranty. I've got a few schematics and a little working knowledge of circuit boards and would like to try it. DISCLAIMER: THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT I CAN FIX IT.

Hi,

May I recommend: http://www.handyersatzteilshop.de/in...971-1584742574

It's in EU, but should not have problems shipping overseas.

Checking the sources in kernel, I have reason to believe that the issue should be fixed in software in the latest OS2006 release. At some point in display init code there is a comment about going in wrong sequence would physically destroy the hardware...

This is unlikely. Units are now shipped with latest FW and it still happens. Also display is enabled already in bootloader, not in linux kernel. That's why you see nokia logo before even kernel loads and you can also see usb icon and progress bar when flashing the firmware (which is also in bootloader, you can flash and/or load linux kernel at that time). Kernel explicitly checks on boot whether display is already enabled so it won't corrupt nice logo and screen contens and give you smooth booting experience :-)

So if there is some fix it must be in bootloader But most probably it is not fixed and cannot be done in software (i.e happens too early on poweron and really is HW issue).

yeah, I am sure I read that it was a bad chipset that was placed in some 770s while others received the better ones. It would be a deal where I would just need to find out which was the bad and which was the good and replace as needed.

Actually, I remeber that when my 770 WSOD, the shop replaced both the display and a chip they called "display driver". I have both the old display and the chip; this chip is not the Epson LCD controller , I will look for it tomorrow to let you know if it has any markings...

Maybe this is the defective chip involved ?

I don't believe the problem is with the display, but the LCD driver chip which I'm guessing is probably a multi-mode chip supporting multiple functions. Since this is going to be an SMD device, one would have have have some serious patience to desolder and replace the chip.

Oh, and if you want to translate the webpage:
