I'll add his previous sentence to the quote, which may matter in this context..

To be fair, he's not excluding MeeGo powered smartphones by those two sentences. Just highlighting the scalability and flexibility of MeeGo.

The market did not say Windows. Windows simply happened, by hook and by crook. Notice that in the mobile space, where Windows holds no monopoly and competition is fierce, Microsoft is having to start from scratch and heavily aping a competitor.

Imagine if the PC space had been this diverse and competitive.

IOW MeeGo is an attempt to get ahead, not just catch up.
.....really hope so

Right....well. I don't think he'd be happy with the N900. Buggy software with no upgrade path in sight...doesn't sound so promising does it?

I am a developer by trade. I like experimenting with new things. But it is a bit much to expect the community to do things like implement mms, and stick people with a contacts application that does not even support assigning custom groups for contacts even though it is definitely possible. People can make excuses like "It's not really a phone." But really that just demonstrates their own stupidity. Computer programs have been able to display information based on filters since forever. There is no reason for a contacts application to ship without such functionality when it supports ad-hoc filtering. (I.E. type a few letters and matching contacts appear.)

I waited a year to get the N900 after having a Treo for about five years. While I am happy with the device as a music player, and internet capable device I have to say that the phone functionality leaves quite a bit to be desired as does the development environment and the documentation. I can only hope that the transition to Qt which is one of the most well documented toolkits in use right now leads to an overall improvement of the Maemo software due to being easier to work with.

Well, but if you come at the N900 from an N800 and N810 perspective, you go "contact list -- is he kidding? What would I want with a contact list?"

I just want a phone to call the tow truck if I break down on the freeway

And MMS is not exactly the center of my life either, though I have been thrilled by the independent MMS development on this site.

Some people seem focused on the things the N900 doesn't do -- I find quite enough things that the N900 DOES DO to keep me happy for the moment.

I just don't like the way Nokia shifted its affection to the new baby (MeeGo) almost before the older baby got out of the crib.

In memory of the good old Nokia!

FOX News of gadget sites - heh. I'm more inclined to say the HELLO! of gadget sites. They've 'lost' Rojas, possibly the only guy there who wasn't a total drooling Appletard. I know he has an N900, although I think he's been as frustrated with it as many here.

Besides, they seize on any Nokia news - if only to have a chance to say Espoo again. In fact, all Nokia needs to do to get more coverage in engadget is to create a town to move their HQ into and name it Pântïhængå or something.

Anssi responded on my blog:

Randall! I am listening to canaries and hope to understand and convert that singing to plain language, which results to action.

Perhaps the most impressive thing I've seen any staff from Nokia do in quite some time. Took the time out to use plain, straightforward terms that equate to "they are listening".

Impressive.
