Other phones don't have Maemo ,
other phones are smart phones, not computers.

Smartphones in their current incarnation are dumbed down pocket computers with a closed operating system. Their makers like the user to believe it is a phone that can do some other fancy computer stuff while the computing end mainly serves marketing purposes at full power.

Smartphones are transition devices on the way to a low end place in the line up where the high end will be a fully configurable do all pocket computer of which you have the early type in your hands.
It will have full desktop OS security options , firewall options, privacy protection and everything user controlled and yes it can be dumbed down to suit all levels of users even, preconfigured or custom.

The N900 is a computer. It can do stuff that sometimes saves me the effort to drag along a laptop, headset, photo camera, mobile phone etc...
I have spent a working day in a bar with my colleagues and contacts thinking I was behind my laptop working on location.

Nokia N900 big fault is that it wasn’t available 10 years earlier when I still would have cared to impress my colleagues at the moment they were gathered around the first porn page in WAP displayed on the new Nokia 7110. Anyway on that day I knew the wait would still be long.

btw:
The apple laptop I type this on has always outdated hardware but the software suits my needs more than what I would get if my primary goal was to be king of hardware specs.

Is there something wrong with that table?

N900 certainly has a HSDPA chip!

I just got my bluetooth keyboard working with my N900 using these instructions. It's a pain (it is like Nokia doesn't want you to be able to do it!) but the external keyboard works.

Comparing purely HW is just like argueing ferrari vs maclaren on everyday shop driving.

Whom truly cares what HW phone has, if limits are elsewhere !?
Just like sportcars, whom cares if your car goes 290 km/h or 300 km/h if there is no road, where you can drive more than 200 km/h ?

Same goes on phone/PC/server/any HW .. why anyone would be interested HW power, which is not usable in anyway or none can see difference ?

n900 is mobile computer, which can be used as phone as well, and it is doing damn good job for that.

It is not HD videocamera, If I ever wished to record HD video, I would buy *real* HD = 1080p camera.
It is not home mediacenter, which would require hdmi and HD output, heck I have PS3 to do that job.

and so on ...

And for RAM .... best OS allways run on lowest RAM

Don't be fooled just by HW specs, they are never even near the whole truth.

Why can't we all accept that anyone who ever buys a phone or computer or anything with surpassable specs is a loser if they want to maintain a superior phone forever.

People who sell technology make a living on obsolescence. They want you to feel bad if your phone doesn't have the best specs. These are the same people who want to sell you a whiter smile.

As long as we have developers and freedom and a command line, we have a shot at doing whatever we want to do with this phone.

It was a fine phone hardware wise when it was released... just too fat and heavy for its screen size.

Just to update, Ubuntu has now been ported to the Nexus One. Still experimental, but the biggest hurdle has been passed.

So the OP does have some credability regarding N900's short-comings and that the competitors now have "better" software.

Note, loosely meaning better by Ubuntu's advantages and its years of legacy. But still alot of work to do before it can be usable day-day and get the kinks sorted like Wifi/BT/aGPS/3D and more.

edit: My bad. I meant better as in, better than original ie Android. Now they have Ubuntu (as noted the debian). Didn't mean to imply it's better than Maemo5.

So the rooted N1 (and Evo) owners are on the verge of crossing those sweet hardware with an OS that can provide more features (after kinks worked out) but that doesn't mean it will be a pleasure to use (needs adjustments to make it mobile friendly compared to Maemo which already is/meant to be).

Hi Kangal, not to give negative comment to your point, but Ubuntu is a debian based distro, so is Maemo, imho N900 is way ahead in this regard.
