Ive noticed that after inserting the mains plug to charge, the battery display bar next to the clock on my n900 sometimes doesnt register that its now starting to charge. Even when when does start.. (supposedly-according to its screen!) ..it often stops after a few seconds with a "Not Charging" message.

Ive heard this to be common, but I am on the latest update, so I am wondering if this is simply a bug that has not been fixed? I did not have this charging problem before updating however.

Im assuming its a bug and not an adapter problem, as it does start charging eventually (usually after switching the phone off and back on). Some websites claim its simply an unfixed bug that may not be present on all mobiles, even on the same version of maemo 5? Is this correct?

thanks for any info

update:- ive noticed the charging light can flicker when i insert the charger into the n900, so perhaps its a physical problem.. but im not going to believe this 100 percent yet, as my phone seems to now charge, but only whilst switched off.

the connection doesnt seem to be damaged in any way, which ive found out is a common cause:

Mine only says not charging occasionally when I have it plugged in via USB, never had a problem with my mains charger, though it is one from my old N86 and I hammered the securing clips flat as I ripped quite a few ports out of various N86's, all of which were replaced at Orange's expense : )

I'd say try using a different charger, if that's no different try via USB.
If you presume it's software, re-flash your device (if you've done an OTA update you should probably re-flash it as a matter of course).
If that doesn't cure it, back to NOKIA it goes.

The mobile managed to start charging around 1pm today, its now 6pm and its roughly 3/4 charged in power.

I took my phone out of the charger about 30 mins ago - the charger is in a drawer now, but the power bar has now started moving up and down again! lol. So Im no longer going to be able to trust the power bar as a sign of really starting to charge at all.

Im wondering if I had not updated my phone, if I would have any of these power problems at all. The phone is still functioning fine aside from the phone struggling to charge. From now on Ill try and stick to charging it via a computer instead of its main adapter, and see if that brings up any similar issues

I switched my phone off and then on again, whilst still not plugged in ...after switching back on, the charge bar has at least stopped moving up and down, and is now more than 3/4 full now, which is probably about right.

Ill await the next update to see if it makes a difference, although the power light can flicker slightly when moving the cable whilst charging (as a test).

I still believe the problem only started after I updated. The mini-USB connection does not seem to be damaged or loose in any way either. thanks

I have seen this error when attempting to charge from an external USB connector on a small form factor PC - connected to a USB connector on the systemboard charging was successful. As such I would hazard a guess that there is insufficient power being delivered to the N900 to charge the battery and run the phone. As you are using the mains AC adapter I suggest the cable may be damaged internally. Should you have an older Nokia charger you may wish to use this with the adapter supplied in the box with the phone.

This is my only nokia, but finding another charger would be a good idea to try out, thanks. If the phone is still struggling to sometimes update, ill still be stuck between believing that the problem lies either with the phones miniUSB connector (as in my link), or phone software (eg the last installed update causing the problem, or some other program installation).

With the yellow charge light flickering fast (bottom left) when I moved it slightly earlier on (with the screen still on), it does sound like a physical issue. Plugging my phone in right now, and I havent had the "not charging" message from earlier on today (yet), my phone is seemingly now recognising the adapter, and the green battery icon (that i no longer trust, lol) is moving up and down. The yellow charge light is not coming on, although im assuming this is only because im using the phone right now, and the yellow charge light should only come on when the screen display is not on?

The phone seems to be more likely to charge properly via its official mains adapter when the n900 is switched off, im now wondering if this could be part of the cause or not, ie a bug, but I think when I charge next, Ill try it via the pc connector (I think it uses the headphone socket on the n900), if it stops again or I get the "not charging" message, ill assume its definately a problem relating to the phones last official update.

thanks
