the developer of gpodder for desktop was so kind to give me some answers:

in short, the newest build for desktop linux has tons of new features and enhancements, but there is little or no communication between the desktop team and the maemo port maintainer (mika). Thomas is rewriting the core code a the moment, with the aim to make it easier to understand (and port, eventually).

I also came across this interesting article:
http://pymaemo.garage.maemo.org/docu...emo_howto.html
..almost makes we want to try this for myself, but with zero linux and code development experience, I donīt really know where to start (IDE..???), I am in the same situation as adammelancon...-)

As for me, I've bitten the bullet and moved on to Canola (after much thrashing about finally getting it installed properly ).
The canola I refer to has not been released yet and is still under development. I do not use the old version for podcasts because of the nature of streaming them. I believe Marcelo @ http://www.marceloeduardo.com/blog/ came on these forums and told us some of the new features.

I think I've actually come to prefer streaming my podcasts if no other reason than it keeps files from taking up precious space on my cards. In the end I suppose it would be nice to be able to have gpodder available as well for the times that you have to be offline and still want to listen.

Well, I finally heard back from Mika Leppinen (project lead for the gpodder Maemo port) and this is what he had to say:

"I stopped development for while, because the architecture of the gPodder is not very good for embedded use and it would take quite much time to rewrite it. I was hoping to find some nice native client that could deliver podcasts to device. It would help if you can test it and report bugs to bugzilla. I could look if some of the bugs are easy to fix."

So if you are having issues with the current version, hop on over to the gpodder garage page and let it be known what you would like to see improved. Although it doesn't seem there will be a complete update forthcoming, it's encouraging that we at least have his attention and there is some hope for improvement in what we have now.

Upstream gPodder 0.10.0 has been released a few days ago. Unfortunately, I don't have an Internet Tablet, so I can't port upstream gPodder to Maemo, but getting the latest (0.10.0) gPodder onto the Internet Tablet would be good, because the _very_old_ 0.8 version (from January 2007) has quite a few bugs and performance problems with lots of podcasts. Does anyone know how to get a developer device?

This is 'old' info , thp, but I believe Quim Gil is still the man to contact:
We are sending a first wave of invitations that should cover all our core contributors’ spectrum. Then we will go for missed people and unusual cases in a second and final wave. If you didn't get an invitation after the first wave and you really think to be in the group of top 500 humans deserving one, you will have an opportunity to push yourself as a candidate. Apply to Quim dot Gil at maemo.org
I sincerely hope you succeed in 'hildonizing' the latest gPodder 0.10.0 release. [When I heard about the update a few days ago, I started reading the tutorial on how version 0.08 was 'hildonized'; unfortunately I do not have an up-to-date linux environment at the moment ... nor the know-how.]
I look forward to hearing whether you'll receive a developer device as I really would like to be able to auto-download my podcasts so that the latest are always available to enjoy when offline. gPodder is a killer application for the Internet Tablet!

It may not be constructive to add my vote in, but I too am waiting desperately for this app's development. It is at the top of my list of wanted software.

Specifically, I'd like to be able to have some sort of "Mark All As Read" function where I wouldn't necessarily have to see all the possible podcasts in a feed all the time and just download them from a given point on. I don't believe this is possible currently?

My eternal thanks to anyone developing upon gPodder!

I too used gpodder, but its quite slow and crashed a few times loosing my complete channel list.

Because of this I modified bashpoddder (http://lincgeek.org/bashpodder/) a bit, and I thought maybe you guys could also use it. Bashpodder downloads new podcasts sequential, instead of parallel, thus avoiding crashes and uses way less cpu power. (So you can sync the new podcasts in the background while doing other stuff.)

Please note: bashpodder is not a gui application!

Changes to bashpodder:
- Only download the last 2 episodes of a podcast, instead of downloading all episodes.
- Downloads the podcasts to the internal SD memory card. (configurable)

What do you need:
- Osso terminal
- Wget package

Download the files here: http://wsys.nl/bp_n800.zip

To install: (in the xterm)
cd MyDocs/.documents
unzip bp_n800.zip

To run:

cd podder
./bashpodder.shell

Modify the config file bp.conf to add and remove channels. (I already provided my favorite channels ;-)) Run the bashpodder.shell script from the terminal to retrieve the last 2 podcasts, rerun daily to fetch newly added podcasts.

Podcasts are downloaded to /media/mmc2/podcasts/<date>

Hope someone finds this useful, is working great for me :-)
